Mount Stella and the Garden of the Righteous
Discovering Milan by walking is a nice alternative way of getting to know the city. There are places sometimes that we don't even imagine exist or have only vaguely heard of.
Sometimes, the hustle and bustle of daily life or simply laziness does not make us move from our comfort zone. And instead, walking is just one of the few things we can do at this time by taking advantage of the beautiful sunny days to be outdoors for a while.
A somewhat special place to see is Monte Stella , which is located in the northwest area of downtown Milan, between the QT8, Portello and Lampugnano districts. It is an area close to the San Siro stadium and the Fiera area.
Monte Stella, better known to the Milanese as the San Siro Montagnetta or simply the little mountain is one of the parks in our city. It has several entrances located in Cimabue, Isemia, Terzaghi, and Sant'Elia streets.
Monte Stella is an artificial hill formed initially with the accumulation of rubble, caused by World War II bombings and other material from the demolition of the last sections of the Bastions, which took place after 1945. It was designed by architect Piero Bottoni, who dedicated it to his wife Elsa Stella, after whom the hill was named.
It is a place of leisure: there are those who walk, those who climb to the top by bicycle, and those who, once they get to the top, sit to admire the view. Even in the evening, when the city lights up, it is definitely worth a visit. That there was a hill where you can climb to the top, in Milan, seems really strange and instead it is definitely worth a walk.
Since 2003 on the little hill you can also visit the Garden of the Righteous, a place dedicated to those who opposed genocides and crimes against humanity. Trees are planted there in honor of Moshe Bejski, Andrei Sakharov, Svetlana Broz, Peter Kuciukian and many others. Each year the choice of the personalities that Milan intends to commemorate in this garden is entrusted to a special committee.
