Gae Aulenti Square
quare Gae AulentiS is one of the most modern and striking places in Milan: it represents a meeting point between the historic center and the financial area of Milan.
The square is the work of architect Cesar Pelli and is the result of the urban redevelopment project of the Garibaldi, Isola and Varesine districts. It was Inaugurated on December 8, 2012.
The square has a circular shape and is surrounded by several truly amazing buildings. The most impressive is the Unicredit Tower complex, with the tallest skyscraper in Italy (231 meters high).
The square is joined by a pedestrian walkway to Corso Como, one of Milan's most vital streets with its many stores, restaurants and bars.
It can be said that Gae Aulenti is a futurist square, and at night it is even more striking with its water, light and sound show.
Gae Aulenti Square received the Landscape Institute Award 2016 in the category of design for a medium-scale development, a national recognition for landscape projects, including innovation and environmental protection.
Milan also won the 2019 Wallpaper Design Awards: city of the year awarded for cutting-edge design, architecture and art.
Today, the square is a meeting point for Milanese evenings and weekends and for admiring the new Milanese skyline from the top of the Unicredit tower.
The square can be easily reached by public transportation; from the Porta Garibaldi green subway station it is just a short walk.
