WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8
BLACK SUN - Southern Gothic in 19th-Century Italy. A View from England | 6:00 PM
Initiative part of MEDFEST - Medioevo Festival in Lombardia
Is there a native Gothic style in 19th-century Italy, a local reworking of English forms and models? Gothic structures and motifs are found in several Italian novels, from The Betrothed to The Adventures of Pinocchio. The Italian "Gothic" journey, highlighted by a special focus on the Nun of Monza, concludes with the anti-rationalist and anti-scientific discourses that flourished at the end of the century, such as spiritualism and occultism, increasingly popular in the popular press. There is also a reference to 19th-century Italian vampires, who never ceased to surface even in the shadow of our dark sun.
Lecture by Anna Enrichetta Soccio, Professor of English Literature at the G. d'Annunzio University of Chieti-Pescara.
After the lecture, there will be a free visit to the wall of the Nun of Monza located on the first floor of the museum (reserved for conference participants). Free admission; reservations required at www.medfestlombardia.com | info@medfestlombardia.com
