MUSEO E TESORO DEL DUOMO DI MONZA
A museum for a priceless treasure. Fourteen centuries of art and history among masterpieces of the West in the myth of the Lombard queen, Theodolinda, and her basilica.
The fruit of the expertise of generations of artists and the generosity of devoted patrons, the priceless heritage of relics and works of art housed in the Museum and Treasure of the Cathedral of Monza constitutes a unique collection in the world not only because of the rarity and preciousness of the materials, but because it allows us to follow the vicissitudes of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist from its foundation to the present day with punctuality.
A journey spanning more than 1,400 years, during which the history of the church was often intertwined with that of the great political and religious institutions of Italy and Europe, in a web of relationships to which the collections are a vivid and often spectacular testimony.
The link between the exhibits and the history of the cathedral is clarified by the spaces, paths and museum layouts, starting with the Filippo Serpero section, dedicated to the Treasure of the vanished early medieval basilica, and ending with the Carlo Gaiani section, specially designed to display the works that have enriched the church's heritage from its reconstruction in the 1300s to the present.
