It could be the mix of mountains, blooming parks, and dense forests. For the elegant villas or the relaxed crotti. For centuries, Lake Como has set the standard.

Lake Como. Light air, just like Goethe once described in his Grand Tour. As Stendhal once put it, the villas simply multiply on the greenery and on the hills, and they’re reflected in the water. Elegance and intrigue reign supreme on the little slice of paradise jutting out onto the water where Villa del Balbianello has sat for hundreds of years. It was the perfect choice for filming 007 Casino Royale with Daniel Craig, not to mention to the wedding venue for Padmé and Anakin in Star Wars Episode II.

Villa Carlotta, in Tremezzo, is no less stunning, with its original Italian garden. The treasure chest of art includes sculptures from Canova and the paintings of Francesco Hayez. Some of the extravagant villas have been transformed into hotels, while others have welcomed a varied list of VIP’s, such as George Clooney. Inland, the wonders of Rationalist architecture are sure to stun.

Numerous projects from Giuseppe Terragni can be admired in Como, while Lecco boasts the Manzonian itineraries. In Colico, the Breva and Tivano winds comes out to play for a bit of surfing. Trails up to the viewpoints are sure to be a favorite of many, like Brunate with its funicular train climbing over 700 meters.
