The Last Supper

The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci is a shining example of the artist's genius. Originally titled Ultima Cena, it is considered as his masterpiece.
It was added to the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites along the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in 1980, guarding it in its convent. It is one of the greatest artworks ever created and exhibited in Lombardy, it is said to be painted between 1495 and 1498 using gouache on plaster in a refectory wall where monks gathered to enjoy their daily meals.
This painting was made with the purpose of reminding the religious community that everyday life should reflect that of Jesus Christ and his Apostles. It was commissioned by Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan at the time in order to embellish the temple and the city itself.
The painter's masterful strokes give the impression of being in a larger hall, the used technique allowed him to retouch the image at later times until they were perfect. Unfortunately, this method was prone to gradual deterioration, thus needing occasional restoration efforts over the centuries. The latest one lasted twenty years, but at last, it was brought back to its original splendor.

Tuesday - Sunday: 8.15am - 7.00pm with continuous opening time (last admission at 6.45pm).
Closed every Monday and in the days: 1 January, 1 May, 25 December.
The visit shifts last 15 min. for a maximum number of 25 people at a time. Reservations are required for all ticket types. Paid admission.
