St. Martin's Church
Religious building of medieval origin, located at the western gate of Teglio.
The church of San Martino stands isolated on the splendid promontory of Teglio, in a place therefore of ancient frequentation, as attested by the numerous archaeological finds and engravings that have emerged on the rocks outcropping in the midst of meadows and forests.
It is a hitherto little-studied building; however, there is no doubt about its medieval origin. Although it has received numerous interventions over the centuries, San Martino retains its original layout with a single nave and bell tower on the right. The expansion undertaken presumably during the second half of the 15th century was limited to the raising of the perimeter walls of the hall in order to build the vaults. Instead, the presbytery was rebuilt, on whose walls interesting frescoes have come to light.
Leaning against the northern side of the church is theOratory of St. Blaise, which, as the subjects of the exterior frescoes indicate, served as an ossuary. This building with soaring Baroque forms, dating from 1748, contrasts happily with the rigorous volumes of St. Martin's.
