The Pearl of Lake Garda
Sirmione is located at the southern end of Lake Garda, on a long, narrow peninsula that stretches into the lake's crystal-clear waters. The area is rich in history and natural beauty, with charming sites nestled along the edges of the surrounding morainic hills. Visitors can explore the historic old town as well as the picturesque nearby hamlets of Colombare and Lugana.
Thanks to its unique natural setting, Sirmione preserves the unmistakable imprint of multiple historical eras. These rich layers of the past continue to inspire new research and discoveries by archaeologists and historians alike.
The recorded history of the peninsula dates back to the second millennium B.C., during the Bronze Age. Lake-dwelling settlements, part of a wider network stretching from Salò to Garda, have been known since the 19th century. In the lower Lake Garda area, three notable submerged sites have been identified: Lake Maraschina (in the municipality of Peschiera) in 1971, and both Port Galeazzi (Sirmione) and San Francesco (Desenzano) in 1976.
Sirmione is a treasure trove of art, history, and remarkable monuments. Its most iconic landmarks include the Scaliger Castle and the Grottoes of Catullus, which also house the Archaeological Museum, the ruins of the Lombard Monastery of San Salvatore, the churches of Sant'Anna della Rocca, Santa Maria Maggiore (also known as Santa Maria della Neve), San Pietro in Mavino, San Francesco, Santa Maria Immacolata, and Sant'Orsola, Villa Callas, the Palazzo Callas Exhibition centre, and the Fisherman’s House.
But that's not all: the town of Sirmione and its surroundings are also known for their vineyards, which grow thanks to the gentle hilly landscape, clay soil and Lake Garda’s micro-climate. This ideal environment produces a variety of refined wines, with the hamlet of Lugana di Sirmione at the heart of the production area for the prestigious Lugana DOC white wine, named after the area itself.
Sirmione is also known for its renowned thermal treatments, which offer visitors a unique experience for physical and mental well-being.
The Terme di Sirmione are famous for producing the Acqua di Sirmione, a sulphurous salsobromoiodic thermal water known for its exceptional therapeutic properties, linked to the ancient Fonte Bojola spring. This valuable natural resource forms the foundation of the town's celebrated thermal treatments.
Sirmione is home to two renowned thermal centres: the Therapy District, located in the Colombare area, and the Thermal Garden, a wellness oasis nestled in the heart of the historic centre. Both facilities offer a comprehensive range of personalised spa treatments and therapeutic programmes, thoughtfully designed to meet the unique needs of each guest.
The Infopoint provides all the information and suggestions you need to explore Sirmione, Lake Garda, and its nearby towns and cities. The tourist centre also offers assistance in booking a stay at one of the accommodation facilities in the area, a ticket sale service for nearby attractions, including theme parks, boat and bus tours, and the Opera at the Arena of Verona. Additional services include luggage storage and wheelchair rental for visitors with reduced mobility.
