The Poplar of Villa di Tirano
A mighty Black Poplar stands giant among the vines and the center of Villa di Tirano.
The municipal territory of Villa di Tirano is developed, at the narrowest point of Valtellina, between two opposing mountain slopes.
To the north of the town are the peaks that separate it from the Swiss Val Poschiavo, while to the south are the soft heights that border the Brescia area of Val Camonica. On this second side, the municipality is home to the Pian Gembro Nature Reserve, a valuable alpine peat bog ecosystem at an altitude of 1350 m. The town center is located at an elevated point above the Adda River, amid well-tended vineyards. Not far from the parish church, in a dominant point with respect to the valley, an incredible specimen of Black Poplar (Populus nigra) can be admired.
The tree, with great landscape value, appears truly majestic with a height of more than 30 meters and a stem with a circumference of more than 5 meters (diameter 165 cm). With its elegant bearing, it grows just above the central road of the village in a pleasant little park, which, following the slope of the slope, grows around a stream. From here one can fully enjoy the view of the terraced vineyards and the Valtellina. Two important tourist routes pass near the little park with the Poplar: the Wine Route and the Terraced Vineyards Route.
Green monument freely visitable.
