Church of St. Peter in Cagnoletti
Erected in the early seventeenth century and rebuilt in the eighteenth century, the beautiful church of Cagnoletti stands on a hillock dominating the old town.
The small churchyard is square in shape, in u
n corner of which is a pillar surmounted by a wrought-iron cross. The gabled facade bears three stacked windows in the center, above a very simple portal. It was decorated, perhaps in the early decades of the last century, with graffiti that is now unfortunately much wasted.
The 'interior has two side chapels, a semicircular masonry pulpit placed near one corner; on the other side is an altar with a niche adorned with a cornice by stucco artist G. Antonio Travello.
On the edge of the chancel is a fine balustrade of 18th-century carved marble. The 'main altar has an embossed, painted and gilded leather antependium with an oval in which St. Peter is depicted in the center. On the high altar is a two-story carved and carved, gilded and painted wooden ciborium with niches and twisted columns, concluded by a small dome that houses a statue of the Redeemer (17th/18th centuries). Hanging above is a canvas depicting Christ giving the keys to St. Peter and the apostles, 17th century.
Since its construction, the church was always part of the parish of Sondrio. It was officiated by a priest sent from Sondrio and salaried by the people of the district under a contract that provided for, in addition to the celebration of mass, the teaching of the first rudiments of the Catholic religion to children.
The church of St. Peter was incorporated into the parish of Torre di S. Maria in 1985.
