Huts at Alpe Mara - Alpe Cavallina
GUGIATTI - SERTORELLI HUT
The Gugiatti-Sertorelli refuge(2138 m a.s.l.) is an old renovated hut located in the wide pastures of the Alpe Cavallina (in the highest part of the Davaglione valley), at the feet of the Southern slope of the Corno di Mara mount (2807 m a.s.l.). The Valtellinese section of the Italian Alpine Club dedicated the hut to the memory of two ski mountaineers (Ermanno Giugiatti and Oscar Sertorelli) who lost their lives in an avalanche in the Eighties. In order to enter the hut, it is necessary to pick up the keys at the CAI Section in Sondrio or at Caffè Paini in Montagna in Valtellina.
CAPANNA MARA HUT
The Capanna Mara hut (1951 m a.s.l.) was built between the Bolettone and Palanzone mounts, just under the pass that links the Bova valley to the Gaggia valley. A writing above the wall reads: "Beata solitudo, sola beatitudo" (Blissed solitude, only bliss).

The suggested itinerary starts from the Alpe Mara or Arcino parking at an elevation of 1748 m a.s.l.. In Montagna in Vatellina, right after reaching St George's church, there is a crossroads, take the path on the right and follow the signs to Alpe Mara. A road open to vehicles (uneven in the last section) leads to the parking. Park your car there and go back until reaching a burnt larch trunk. After several turns the path - provided with white-red and red-white-red trail signs - crosses a small larch wood and reaches the lonely Casera di Mara. Just above the Casera there is the road open to vehicles that links Arcino to the Gugiatti-Sertorelli hut. Follow it for a short strech and, on the left, you'll see the old unsurfaced road which runs parallel to the Arcino-hut road, then turns left, climbs up crossing a larch wood, turns right and meets once again the road that links Arcino to the Gugiatti-Sertorelli hut. Head Westwards and you'll reach the Gugiatti-Sertorelli hut.
