Teatro alla Scala
One of the most famous international opera temples, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan enchants the world with opera, concerts and ballets.
L a Scala Theater, commissioned by the Empress of Austria, was inaugurated on August 3rd 1778. It is famous all over the world for being one of the most prestigious theaters in Milan.

Its name derives from the spot where it was erected, the church of Santa Maria alla Scala. Some of the greatest XIXth century plays took place on its stage: La Norma by Bellini, Otello and Falstaff by Verdi, La Gioconda by Ponchielli, Mefistofele by Boito and Turandot by Puccini.
The allied bombings of 1943 destroyed the hall ceiling, part of the galleries and the set. Reubilding works lasted three years. The theater reopening concert in 1946 was directed by Arturo Toscanini.
It has been the setting for various performances: it hosted the voice of Mariah Callas, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo, plus ballet presentations by Leonide Massine, George Balanchine, Rudolf Nureyev and Carla Fracci, just to mention a few.
Ever since 1951, the theaters' opening season at La Scala starts on december 7th, the day of Saint Ambrose, patron of the regional capital.
