ARTI<>STA presents, at its space on Vicolo Lambro 1, an exhibition curated by Rosella Fusi, dedicated to artists’ books. Continuing the theme of addressing issues related to the environment, the earth, and eco-sustainable development, this exhibition explores the theme through new forms of artistic expression.
The artist’s book emerged as a new genre linked to the “Fine Arts” only in the second half of the 20th century.
In the mid-20th century, artists began experimenting with less conventional media, formats, and materials in order to find alternative paths to traditional forms of expression, such as painting, sculpture, or graphic art. Intrigued by the “book” as a medium, they began to use this ancient form (previously associated with literary texts) for an entirely new form of artistic experimentation.
The artist’s book seeks to clothe words—and the stories they form—in the garb of visual art, thereby highlighting the symbolism of the richness and value of reading. For this reason, we have chosen to present numerous works of art in the form—whether apparent or hidden—of a book; through the extraordinary and unpredictable nature of their content, they become a metaphor for a value that may seem hidden but is nonetheless universal. Each artist conveys, through their own language, an artistic message using images and materials.
