Sanctuary of San Patrizio
Solitary, remote and surrounded by the woods and meadows of Mount Cavlera, the Sanctuary of San Patrizio is an artistic and spiritual complex with very mysterious beginnings. Why the homage to Saint Patrick, so unusual in Italy?
Built between the end o the 16th century and the beginning of the 18th century, its name seems to be linked to the presence of a few Irish fabric and wool merchants, in Colzate and Vertova - important trade crossroads for the time. Another legend says that one of these merchants, after successfully escaping some bandits, built a small shrine to thank Saint Patrick. Another yet references an old well devoted to the Saint, echoing the one in Orvieto that, from Mount Cavlera, went down deep within the earth to gather water from the Serio River.
Whatever the reason for its origins, the Sanctuary of San Patrizio is an arduous, secret place, despite being easily reachable in a few minutes by car from Colzate, or with a half-hour walk along the old dirt road crossing the forest.
It can be visited all weekday afternoons. After reaching it, it will amaze you with its frescoed cloisters, with incredible scenic views over the Seriana Valley. Here, art and nature meet in a poetic and spiritual dimension, where you can find your peace.
