On Sunday 14 June 2026, Pavia is transformed. The streets of the historic centre fill with men-at-arms, courtiers, musicians and flag-throwers dressed in fifteenth-century costume, the River Ticino hosts traditional boats competing in ancient races, and the Castello Visconteo becomes for one whole day the court of Filippo Maria Visconti. This is the Palio del Ticino, the most important historical reenactment in the city, reaching its twentieth edition in 2026. All events are free and open to the public.

What Is the Palio del Ticino and Why Does It Take Place in Pavia

The Palio del Ticino commemorates one of the most extraordinary episodes in medieval Lombard history: the victory of Filippo Maria Visconti's river fleet over the Most Serene Republic of Venice in June 1431. The ducal fleet, led by the Pavian captain Pasino degli Eustachi, defeated one of the most powerful naval forces of the time on the River Ticino, preventing the siege of the city. Nearly six centuries have passed since that battle, yet Pavia continues to celebrate it with an event that draws over ten thousand visitors each year and involves more than one hundred and fifty costumed performers.

The Associazione Palio del Ticino, founded in 2007, has built over time a reenactment that goes far beyond folklore. It is a rigorous historical reconstruction grounded in archival research, which informs every aspect of the event: clothing, gestures, rituals and competitions. The twentieth anniversary edition of 2026 promises to be the most ambitious to date.

The Palio del Ticino 2026 Programme

The day of the Palio unfolds across several moments, all concentrated on Sunday 14 June, with activities spread between the Gardens of the Castello Visconteo, Pavia Cathedral and the banks of the Ticino.

Palio Kids and Medieval Life at the Castello Visconteo (10:00–16:00)

From 10:00 and throughout the day, the Gardens of the Castello Visconteo host two parallel events aimed at different audiences. The first is Palio Kids, a series of hands-on workshops for children: young visitors can explore the medieval world through the apothecary's stall, where they discover the properties of herbs and spices, and colour in a medieval herbal made up of seven magical plants to take home. A second workshop invites children to personalise a full-scale replica of the Visconti shield using colours and artistic techniques of their own choosing. Both activities require advance booking.

The second event is La vita in Castello — Life in the Castle — a full-day immersion in fifteenth-century culture: a medieval encampment with the men-at-arms' tents, a jousting tournament on horseback, falconry displays in a volary of over twelve metres, and performances by flag-throwers. Theatrical guided tours by the company "Gli Smaramaldi" recount courtly tales linked to Filippo Maria Visconti, Beatrice Tenda, Agnese del Maino, Bianca Maria Visconti and Francesco Sforza: loves, intrigues and obsessions that shaped the fate of the Duchy of Milan.

Blessing Ceremony at Pavia Cathedral (11:00)

At 11:00, the Duke and Duchess, accompanied by men-at-arms, flag-throwers and courtiers, proceed to Pavia Cathedral for the Blessing Ceremony. This is one of the most solemn and evocative moments of the entire event, a ritual that blends religious devotion and historical pageantry within one of the most imposing architectural spaces in the city.

The Historic Procession: from the Castle to the Covered Bridge (16:30)

In the afternoon, at 16:30, the event reaches its climax. The Historic Procession sets off from the Gardens of the Castello Visconteo and winds through the streets of Pavia's historic centre all the way to the Ponte Coperto. The entire court marches in formation: the Duke and Duchess, the nobles, the musicians with medieval drums and trumpets, armoured men-at-arms, and courtiers in brocade gowns. Hundreds of performers fill the city-centre streets in a spectacle that transports onlookers deep into fifteenth-century Lombardy. No booking is required to watch the procession: simply take up a position along the route.

The River Competitions: Barcé Race and Archery

At the end of the procession, on the banks of the Ticino in Borgo Ticino, the competitions that determine the winner of the Palio's drape take place. The barcé race pits against each other the traditional Pavian flat-bottomed boats, steered standing up by two oarsmen — an ancient river-navigation technique that has survived to the present day. At the same time, on the riverbank, archers compete in the official Fitarco contest: the archery score is added to the rowing result to determine the overall winner and the award of the drape.

The Castello Visconteo: Heart of the Reenactment

The Castello Visconteo of Pavia, built in 1360 by Galeazzo II Visconti, was never merely a fortress. It was the seat of a refined and cultured court, a centre of cultural as well as military power. On the day of the Palio, this monumental space reclaims its original function: it hosts the court, stages the competitions, and brings to life through gestures and costumes the daily existence of a distant era. Those who visit the Castle on this occasion do not find a museum but a living scene, animated by performers embodying the trades, rituals and social dynamics of fifteenth-century society.
