Lomellina, the Little Loire

Saturday, 17 October 2026, sees the return of “Lomellina, the Little Loire”, an itinerary dedicated to discovering the historical and artistic heritage of Lomellina, in the province of Pavia, through castles, abbeys, churches and historic villages.

Organised by the Ecomuseo del Paesaggio Lomellino, the day offers guided visits to Candia Lomellina, Breme and Scaldasole, with the opportunity to enjoy a lunch featuring local Lomellina specialities.

The name “Little Loire” refers to the remarkable concentration of castles, towers, fortified buildings, abbeys and historic residences scattered throughout this part of the province of Pavia. The Ecomuseum promotes this heritage through itineraries designed to showcase the area's history, architecture and landscape.

The programme of Lomellina, the Little Loire

The meeting point is at 10:00 am in Candia Lomellina, at Via Eugenio Bergamasco 1.

Candia Lomellina: the Cassino Museum and the Church of San Michele

The first stop is Candia Lomellina, where a guided tour of the Cassino Museum and the Church of San Michele is scheduled.

Visitors can discover works and artistic testimonies linked to the history of the area, including frescoes attributed to Moncalvo and Lanino.

Candia is the starting point of a journey connecting several small towns in Lomellina and their historical, artistic and religious heritage.

Breme: the ancient abbey and religious heritage

At 11:15 am, the tour continues to Breme, one of the historic villages of Lomellina.

The guided tour includes the former Abbey of San Pietro, the 10th-century crypt, the 8th-century Baptistery and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.

The Abbey of Breme is one of the historic sites included in the Ecomuseum's “Lomellina, the Little Loire” project, together with the many castles and monumental buildings scattered throughout the area.

Lunch featuring Lomellina specialities

At 12:30 pm, there will be an optional lunch break, with a traditional Lomellina menu at a cost of €25 per person.

Food is an important part of the Ecomuseum's programme, offering visitors the opportunity to discover local products and culinary traditions. The area is historically associated with rice cultivation and a distinctive cuisine shaped by its agricultural landscape.

Scaldasole: a visit to the castle

In the afternoon, at 3:30 pm, the itinerary reaches Scaldasole, where a guided tour of the exterior and interior of the Castle is scheduled.

The fortified complex is one of the most significant examples of castle architecture in Lomellina and completes a day combining religious heritage, local history and medieval fortifications.

“Lomellina, the Little Loire” presents a territory characterised by its wealth of castles, abbeys and historic villages, set within a landscape strongly shaped by rice fields and waterways.

The Ecomuseo del Paesaggio Lomellino promotes a network of more than 25 abbeys, castles, churches and historic residences through dedicated itineraries.

The 17 October 2026 itinerary offers the opportunity to explore three different locations in the Pavia area in a single day, moving from the artistic heritage of Candia Lomellina, to the religious architecture of Breme, and finally to the castle of Scaldasole.
