Cittadini Press Palace and Castelletto Mendosio of Abbiategrasso
The origins of the settlement date back to the 13th century when a small urban agglomeration came to form around a "castellino" to support the workers who were collaborating on the excavation of the Naviglio Grande. A true Abbiatense port, this was once a place of exchange, animated by barges, merchants and workers.
It is no coincidence that two historic taverns arose here, that of Sant'Antonio and that of the Angelo. It can be assumed that what remains of the "castellino"-a tower from the late 14th century-was incorporated into the original structure of the Palazzo Cittadini Stampa. The latter is a magnificent Baroque aristocratic building owned by the municipality and recently restored.
The elegant palace overlooking the Naviglio Grande was built at the behest of the wealthy Cittadini family in the 15th century; the date of construction is unknown, but the earliest documents date back to the late 17th century. Purchased by Giuliano Baronio in 1835, it passed to his daughter Laura, who married the patriot Gaspare Stampa, who remained there until his death in 1874. The painstaking restoration completed in 2014 restored to its former splendor the rooms richly decorated with fresco cycles featuring bucolic landscapes and mythological themes from the 17th century.
