Ice Falls in Via Mala

The Via Mala is the old road between Val di Scalve in the province of Bergamo, and Val Seriana, in the province of Brescia. In the winter, it is transformed into an enchanted ice kingdom.

It was built in 1865 replacing the original Mediaeval route that was used to transport minerals from the mines in Bergamo’s valleys. The miners were scared by the sections of the route with sheer drops over the River Dezzo, which is why it became known as the Via Mala [Bad Way]. Today, however, this area attracts visitors, who love its timeless beauty and the stunning ice falls that can be seen in short periods during the winter. 

A sight that is one of nature’s marvels, protected by the shaded area in which the route originates. There are stalactites, stalagmites, small ice falls and ice sculptures that are both fragile and temporary, which only makes them all the more precious. To admire this sight, you need to go to Colere, a little under 1000 metres under the peak of Presolana, in the province of Bergamo. Here you can park just past the third tunnel of the Provincial Road SP294 della Val di Scalve close to a large parking area near to a road maintenance house, before continuing along the Via Mala on foot. 

The first part is 1 km long, protected by railings and provided with binoculars along the route so that you can admire the panorama, before arriving - for the more adventurous - at the walkway over the sheer drop of the ravine. The second part is more difficult and involves entering the canyons to become immersed in the surroundings and experience their beauty from even closer up. A thrilling route, whatever the season.
