Church of S. Marta

The church of S. Marta is certainly an ancient building, even if the external features are of the nineteenth-century.

To be observed carefully are the marble slabs placed on the façade; one is the funeral tombstone of Lucio Minicio Exorato, a notable of the Roman empire, of the first century. d.C. It was found in the lake in front of the Roman walls of Santa Maria Rezzonico and here moved in 1500 by the Menaggio born humanist  Francesco Calvi. Above, a stone  bas-relief depicting the castle of Menaggio, of the 16th century which has become the municipal coat of arms.

At the entrance of the church there is a medieval holy water font, and on the altar, a  much venerated crucifix . On the walls precious paintings, including a Nativity and a Flagellation of the 17th century.
