Scaldasole castle

The Castello di Scaldasole is one of the most fascinating fortified complexes in the province of Pavia.

With its seven medieval towers and the renowned 15th-century ricetto — a unique example in the entire Lomellina area — the castle is a must-visit destination for anyone wishing to explore the historic and architectural heritage of the Pavia region.

Currently a private residence, the manor also houses an archaeological museum and is open to groups and school parties by appointment.

History of Castello di Scaldasole

From Lombard Origins to the Middle Ages

The castle's origins are believed to date back to the Lombard era. Its original core was built around the late 10th century, before being rebuilt between the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1404, the high Visconti dignitary Ardengo Folperti — a member of a noble Pavia family — commissioned the construction of the ricetto, entrusting the project to the architects Milanino de Saltariis, Bernardo and Martino de Soncino. The ricetto was designed as a parade ground and refuge for the local population, while the castle itself became a noble residence.

The Renaissance and Illustrious Guests

In the second half of the 15th century, the Malaspina marquises, the new feudal lords of Scaldasole, enriched the complex with a portico and a loggia. The castle soon became the setting for major historical events, welcoming:

Cardinal Gallio and the Modern Centuries

In 1582, the castle passed to Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio of Como — formerly secretary to Pope Pius IV and Secretary of State under Gregory XIII — who lavishly redesigned its gardens. Of that intervention, two magnificent features survive today: two enormous magnolia trees on the northern side of the moat and a stone staircase adorned with two statues from Vicenza on the western side. The Cardinal also commissioned a set of beautiful stables, which remain well preserved to this day.

In 1804, the nobleman Giovanni Antonio Strada of Garlasco acquired full ownership of the castle and the former fief, which also included a bakery oven and an olive press in the adjoining farmstead.
