In the heart of the Oltrepo Pavese, perched on a hill overlooking the point where the Valle Scuropasso opens onto the plain, the village of Cigognola is home to one of the most fascinating medieval castles in the entire province of Pavia.

With a history rooted in the twelfth century and a landscape that embraces the Alps and the Monte Rosa massif, Cigognola is a must-visit destination for those exploring the historic and scenic hinterland of southern Lombardy.

The municipality has around 1,300 inhabitants and sits opposite Broni, easily accessible along the main roads of the Oltrepo. Walking its stone alleyways, visitors breathe in an authentic atmosphere shaped by centuries of silence, history and tradition.

History of Cigognola: from medieval origins to the present day

The earliest documented records of Cigognola date back to 982, in a deed of donation, and later to 8 August 1164, when the territory appeared in the imperial diploma by which Frederick I Barbarossa placed the northern and central Oltrepo under the jurisdiction of Pavia. This indicates that the village was already at that time a fortified settlement governed by its own local lord.

For centuries Cigognola was the domain of the powerful Sannazzaro family of Pavia, prominent members of the Guelph faction in the Oltrepo. In 1406, through the scheming of the Beccaria family of Pavia, the fief was taken from them. A few years later, in 1415, it passed to Giorgio Aicardi, who added the surname Visconti and founded the house of Visconti Aicardi Scaramuzza, which would rule Cigognola for over three centuries.

In the eighteenth century, upon the extinction of that line, the fief passed to Barbara d'Adda and then to her son Alberico Barbiano di Belgioioso, the last feudal lord of Cigognola before the abolition of feudalism in 1797. During the Napoleonic era, the vast estate including the castle was purchased by the Gazzaniga family, who passed it by inheritance to the Arnaboldi-Gazzaniga and finally to the current owners, the Brichetto-Arnaboldi, today known as the Moratti family.

Cigognola Castle: architecture and transformations

From defensive fortress to aristocratic residence

The Castello di Cigognola was built at the beginning of the thirteenth century by the Sannazzaro family as a military stronghold guarding the Valle Scuropasso and the trade routes linking the hills of the Oltrepo with the Po plain. Its strategic position on a hill clearly visible from the surrounding valleys made it an indispensable point of territorial control.

In 1372 the castle was attacked and captured by Giovanni Acuto (Sir John Hawkwood), the celebrated English mercenary commander in the service of various Italian lords, an event that testifies to the military importance of the structure in the context of medieval Lombard warfare.

With the gradual decline of military needs, the fortress was transformed into an elegant aristocratic residence. The austere spaces of the stronghold gave way to the refined interiors of a noble dwelling, while certain features of the original building were preserved.

The nineteenth-century neo-Gothic restoration

The decisive turning point in the castle's architectural history came at the beginning of the nineteenth century, when the complex was extensively restored and reconfigured in neo-Gothic style, in full harmony with the Romantic movement that was sweeping across Europe and rekindling interest in medieval aesthetics.

In homage to this Romantic reinterpretation of the Middle Ages, the imposing square tower and the walls with Ghibelline battlements were erected, giving the structure its unmistakable silhouette visible from the surrounding valleys. The doorways were adorned with heraldic coats of arms and elegant terracotta decorations, while certain sections of the original exterior were left almost entirely intact, preserving the layered memory of earlier centuries.

The entire complex is still enclosed by a curtain wall with an earthen rampart and features a beautiful entrance staircase. The floor plan is highly articulated, with the great crenellated tower as its dominant central element.

The interiors: furnishings, reception rooms and the literary salon

The precious interior furnishings date from the early twentieth century, a period when the castle was enriched with Art Deco reception rooms. Among the most distinguished spaces are the Library, the Billiard Room, the Green Drawing Room and the Hunting Room, all of which evoke the aristocratic life of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

During those years the castle also became an important cultural hub: its rooms hosted a celebrated literary salon frequented by some of the most illustrious figures in Italian culture. Distinguished guests who stayed within these walls included the philosopher Benedetto Croce, the Nobel Prize-winning poet Eugenio Montale, the novelist Riccardo Bacchelli, the poet Salvatore Quasimodo, the writer Guido Piovene and the economist and future President of the Italian Republic Luigi Einaudi. For all of them, the castle was a place of meeting, debate and creative inspiration.

The Parco delle Rimembranze: nature, panorama and memory

Adjacent to the castle, the Parco delle Rimembranze (Park of Remembrance) is a green space of extraordinary scenic and historic value. Shaded by centuries-old horse chestnut and cedar of Lebanon trees, the park offers a cool and evocative microclimate, ideal for a walk away from the summer heat.

The park's privileged hilltop position provides a panorama of exceptional breadth: on clear days the view sweeps from the Oltrepo hills across the Po plain all the way to the Alpine arc and the Monte Rosa massif, offering one of the most spectacular vistas in the entire province of Pavia.

At the heart of the park stands the Monument to the Fallen of the Two World Wars, which lends the place a profound commemorative and community dimension. Surrounded by centuries-old monumental trees and collective historical memory, the Parco delle Rimembranze is a space for contemplation cherished by visitors of all ages.

Cigognola among vines and wine: the Oltrepo Pavese in the glass

The soul of Cigognola extends well beyond its history and architecture: the village is set within one of Lombardy's most celebrated wine-producing territories. The hills surrounding the settlement have been cultivated with vines for centuries and yield some of the most prized appellations of the Oltrepo Pavese, including Bonarda, Buttafuoco and Sangue di Giuda.

Today the castle is home to the eponymous Moratti family winery, which manages 36 hectares of estate land, 28 of which are planted with vines at altitudes between 300 and 350 metres. The vineyards, cultivated using organic and precision viticulture methods, grow Pinot Noir, Barbera and Nebbiolo. The Metodo Classico sparkling wines of Castello di Cigognola have earned international recognition, including the Rosa d'Oro award in the ViniPlus 2026 Guide by AIS Lombardia.

Although it is a private residence, the castle opens its doors during FAI Open Days and cultural events, giving visitors the opportunity to explore its interiors and taste the estate's wines.

How to visit Cigognola: itineraries and practical tips

Cigognola lies in the heart of the Oltrepo Pavese, approximately one hour by car from Pavia and easily reachable from Milan as well. The village sits opposite Broni and is well connected by road along the main arteries of the Oltrepo.

The ideal visit begins along the Via Emilia, skirting the picturesque artificial lake known as "La Vasca" (created in 1948 for irrigation purposes and restored in the 2000s). From there, the route climbs towards the historic centre, where Via Ugo Giorgi is home to the church of San Bernardo Abate di Chiaravalle, built in 1623 at the behest of Pope Urban VIII and restored in the eighteenth century. Continuing along the Viale delle Rimembranze, visitors reach Piazza Castello, from which they can access the outer curtain wall of the manor and a dirt path through the vineyards leading to the Talanca well (1859).

Cigognola fits naturally into a broader itinerary devoted to the castles and medieval villages of the Oltrepo Pavese, combining art, history, landscape and high-quality food and wine. The nearby destinations of Stradella, Broni and Casteggio round out a rich and varied route through the heart of southern Lombardy.
