Belfry of San Giorgio
On the eastern shores of Lake Como, in Dorio, standing in all its magnificence, is the Belfry of San Giorgio.
Located beside the Church of the same name, the Belfry replace the original Romanesque tower in 1653 and was restored in 1978. This tall, slender bell tower stands between the green trees and the blue waters of the lake, creating a contrast of colours that has enchanted visitors from all over.
The Belfry is not just an architectural monument, it is also an authentic balcony out over nature. It can be reached along one of the most charming sections of the Sentiero del Viandante[Wayfarer’s Path]-, the ancient section, some 45 kilometres long, between Abbadia Lariana and Colico. With its many historic villages, churches, meadows and cultivated terraces, the path is an opportunity to become completely immersed in the history and traditions of the area, with spectacular panoramic views over the lake and mountains of the Valsassina.
Along this walk, the Belfry of San Giorgio appears like a silent, but imposing watchtower offering breathtaking views over the mountains of Grigne and the Rhaetian Alps, which frame the lake and create an haven of peace and serenity. The tower is the ideal place for a thoughtful pause, a place in which time truly seems to stand still and where history, spirituality and nature show Lake Como at its most authentic. The perfect destination for those who want to experience the area around Como in the most authentic, engaging manner.
