Basilica di Sant'Abbondio
Basilica di Sant'Abbondio is a great example of Como Romanesque. It is located outside the town walls, at the side of Monte Croce
The Romanesque-style Basilica di Sant'Abbondio is made from grey Moltrasio stone.
The façade is divided into five sections by pilasters, hinting at the five naves that divide up the inside of the Basilica; four half-columns – which can be seen resting on the pilasters – were paired with a portico which supported an upper space for the devotion of the faithful.
The portal features a sophisticated carved decoration in low relief with plant patterns, allegorical figures and monsters.
The upper part of the façade and the sides of the building feature rows of small arches and a series of single-opening windows at regular intervals, lightening the appearance of the structure.
The presence of a double bell tower lends uniqueness to the Basilica; the south tower is the original structure, while the north tower was knocked down in the 19th century and rebuilt.
The inside of the Basilica features the same architectural characteristics as the outside, but the space is invigorated and accentuated by the extraordinary quality of light streaming in through the windows.
Next to the Basilica, the medieval monastery has been restored and is now the headquarters of the Faculty of Law of the University of Insubria.
