Valle del Giongo
In the Sedrina area, in the province of Bergamo, Valle del Giongo is one of the most secluded, green areas of the foothills of the Bergamasque Alps. The area is part of the natural system of Canto Alto and the Valle del Giongo, recognised as a Special Conservation Area within the Parco dei Colli di Bergamo natural park.
It is a woody valley, with very few houses, crossed by a river of the same name, which flows down towards Brembo near Botta di Sedrina. Water is a constant for a large part of this itinerary: it flows through rocks, shaded areas, small wells, and waterfalls, giving the valley its cool, secluded nature.
One of the most popular itineraries begins from Botta di Sedrina, in Via Camosso, and it continues into a trail that forms a loop. This route reveals the nature and history of the Bergamasque foothills, alternating sections of wood, mule trails, rocky outcrops and wider views out over the mountains surrounding the valley.
Valle del Giongo is also an interesting destination for its naturalistic and geological qualities. The self-guided route in the Canto Alto - Valle del Giongo Nature Park is devised to showcase the main elements in terms of animals, plants, geology and scenery in the area. There are different environments along the way, inviting the walker to carefully observe the rocks, vegetation, water, and small natural habitats that follow one another at short distances.
What makes this excursion more surprising are the hidden elements along the valley, including grottoes, waterfalls, and small gullies shaped by water. It is a route to be explored slowly, paying attention to the details: the sound of the stream, the moisture on the rocks, passages through the woods, and sudden glimpses of waterfalls.
In summer, Valle del Giongo is a perfect destination for those seeking a hike immersed in nature, not far from Bergamo but far off the beaten track. Its charm is that it is a natural treasure: a cool, quiet and in part, wild valley, where a hike is a simple way to enter into contact with scenery that is still authentic
