The Beech Tree in Val Malga
A formidable beech specimen leaves hikers exploring the Val Malga speechless.
The vast Val Camonica has numerous side valleys that reach up to the mountain peaks.
One of the most fascinating is the Val Malga, which, starting from the Sonico area, climbs up to branch off into the paths leading to the slopes of Corno Baitone and Corno Miller, both of which are over 3,300 metres high. A truly splendid beech tree (Fagus sylvatica) can be admired here. Located in the vicinity of the Baita Boiana cabin, which can be reached in a 15-minute walk from the parking area of the Rifugio Val Malga lodge, the tree impresses with its stature and foliage.
With a vigorous trunk circumference of 5.5 metres (diameter 170 cm) and a height of 25 metres, it dominates the surrounding area. When centuries-old beech trees are encountered, they usually appear rather low due to the loss of the upper branches. The specimen in Val Malga, on the other hand, is in excellent health and has an ideal bearing. For nature lovers, it really is an unmissable tree. It is also an opportunity to venture into the heart of Adamello Park, in particular to the enchanting Baitone basin, where the lodge of the same name (2281 m a.s.l.) welcomes visitors to the shores of the lake created by a large dam.
