Bereguardo Castle
Primarily intended for residential purposes and built to defend the western border of the State of Milan
The Castle of Bereguardo is an impressive Visconti-style fortress from the 14th century. It stands in the center of the town, surrounded by the clearly visible remains of the ancient moat. The castle has a square layout, though today it features an unusual “U” shape due to the complete loss of its northern wing.
Its name clearly reflects the influence of French literature, deriving from the French Bel-Regard (“Beautiful View”), later Italianized as Bereguardo.
Today, the castle houses the Town Hall and the Civic Library, and still bears traces of the presence of Filippo Maria Visconti: on one of the windows of the northern wing, his initials FM can still be seen.
The castle is located at the end of the Bereguardo Canal, which flows from Abbiategrasso.
The entire area between Pavia and Bereguardo, along the left bank of the Ticino River, offers remarkable scenic views, characterized by lush vegetation and a harmonious landscape.
