Church of St. Anthony Abbot

Built on the hump to the east of the remains of Grumello Castle, it is wide and very high, with very sober architectural lines.   Externally it is devoid of plaster, except in the apsidal part. The facade ends at the top with a triangular tympanum, is vertically tripartite by pilasters, and is softened by a prothyrum supported externally by slender granite columns. The spacious and harmonious single-nave interior comprises three bays separated by pilasters, ending in elegant stucco capitals. On the vault are three medallions with stucco cornices where episodes from the viat of the saint are depicted. On the wall of the first bay hang two large, very dilapidated canvases of little value. The left chapel is the richest in the church, all adorned with well-made stuccoes, which on the vault and side walls frame frescoes. The other chapel, simply whitewashed and adorned with a stucco cornice along the entrance arch, like the previous one, has a fine stone balustrade from the 18th century and on the altar a canvas depicting St. Lucy, St. Agatha and St. Apollonia. The high altar is surmounted by a 1600s canvas depicting St. Anthony taken by temptation. Source: Churches surveyed by the Sondrio Valtellina Mountain Community.

Church of St. Lawrence

The titular church of St. Lawrence has a faciata with the central part arched and raised from the roof, plastered wall structure, and entrance with relief decorations.   A trefoil window stands out on the facade. The bell tower with cipollon roof stands on the north-facing wall. The interior of the church has a barrel-vaulted roof, and the plan is Latin cross with two side chapels. The right chapel, decorated with 17th-century stucco, is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and shows frescoes on the life of the Madonna and an altarpiece dedicated to her by the painter Caresana. At the entrance, in a recess in the wall, is the Baptismal Font with wooden covering from the church of San Matteo in Valmadre. Also at the entrance, on either side, are two wooden confessionals. Before the chancel are two frescoed medallions depicting St. Lawrence and St. Andrew, polychrome marble balustrades divide the chancel hall. Richly carved and worked choir stalls run along the apse, and on the wall is a canvas depicting the glory of the patron saint. The weekday chapel, with a barrel vault, houses a painting of the Rosary from the church of St. Matthew in Valmadre, a canvas called "of Pentecost," and a 17th-century wooden crucifix of considerable size. A walk through the orchards in bloom

The blossoms in Valtellina’s apple orchards are an extraordinary spring awakening. Nature returns to the Rhaetian side of the Alps in April, from the province of Sondrio to Switzerland.   Along this natural border, the alluvial cones in the municipal areas of Ponte in Valtellina, Bianzone, and Semio-Lovero, fertile concavities forming a fan, are ideal for the creation of terraces, where vines and apple trees form the backbone of traditional farming life in Valtellina.  With the arrival of spring in the central Valtellina, there is an authentic sea of blossoms, with flashes of pink and white petals from the apple trees, releasing a sweet, delicate fragrance into the crisp mountain air.  This creates the perfect atmosphere for walks or bike rides around the orchards, using the flower-filled routes to create an itinerary where you can choose your own starting point for a day’s exploring. Cologna, Sernio, Lovero, Villa di Tirano, Chiuro, Ponte in Valtellina, and Tresivio are the locations where you can discover the magic of the apple blossom.   A floral excursion that offers its best in the sunshine, but also an opportunity to explore the characteristic local villages if your trip is affected by the weather. One of these worth visiting is Ponte in Valtellina, a traditional old village with a centre that seems suspended in the mists of time. Cobbled streets and old courtyards, plus uninhabited noble palazzos create a magical setting in which to discover historic churches and local restaurants where you can enjoy a typical lunch. Just over a 15-minute drive from Sondrio and 20 minutes from Tirano, Ponte in Valtellina is right between these two locations, and is a great place from which to explore nature and history in the spring.
