For the next three years, the first Monument Classic of the season will start in Pavia
The 116th edition of the Classicissima di Primavera will start for the second time from Pavia.
The Milano-Sanremo 2025 starts in Pavia, heading north toward Milan before reaching Certosa, where it joins the traditional course. The race passes through Casteggio and Voghera, then takes a detour into the Oltrepò Pavese, reaching Rivanazzano and Salice Terme, before rejoining the classic route in Tortona. From there, it follows the historic road that has connected Milan to the Riviera di Ponente for over 110 years.
The team presentation is scheduled for Friday, March 21, at 5 PM in Pavia.
Milano-Sanremo 2025: Events in Pavia Awaiting the Classicissima
On the occasion of the start of the Milano-Sanremo 2025 from Pavia, the city is preparing to welcome enthusiasts and visitors with a series of events dedicated to cycling and its history. A rich program of cultural and sporting events will animate the days leading up to the race, involving institutions, associations, and cycling enthusiasts.
The event schedule kicks off on Saturday, March 15, at 11:00 AM in the Broletto conference hall with the presentation of the book Il fiore che vola by Claudio Gregori, a historic cycling journalist for La Gazzetta dello Sport. The book retraces a century of cycling in Pavia, from the pioneers to the start of the 2024 Milano-Sanremo.
Also on Saturday, March 15, and Sunday, March 16, at Santa Maria Gualtieri in Piazza della Vittoria, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, visitors can admire an exhibition of vintage bicycles that belonged to Fausto Coppi, curated by Veloclub Belgioioso. "Two wheels with great sporting and historical significance," emphasized Sports Councillor Angela Gregorini. At the same time, in the Discover hall of the Broletto, a display of cycling memorabilia curated by collector Matteo Ghitti will be set up, featuring vintage jerseys and sports magazines. The exhibition will be open on Saturday from 1:30 PM to 7:00 PM and on Sunday from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and from 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM.
On Wednesday, March 19, at 6:00 PM, the Delfino bookstore will host the presentation of the Pagine al vento series, a collection of books dedicated to the world of cycling. Journalists Gino Cervi, Marco Ballestracci, and Stefano Rizzato from Rai Sport will participate in the event.
On Thursday, March 20, Pavia will be a stop on the first stage of the Sanremo Storica, a non-competitive cycling tour that recreates the cycling of the past. The 24 participants, coming from various parts of Italy and Germany, will ride the route on vintage bicycles without gears, known as giroruota, wearing historical attire. After departing from Milan and passing through Binasco and Certosa, the group will arrive at Piazza della Vittoria around noon for a refreshment break offered by Pizzeria Marechiaro, before continuing towards Novi Ligure, home to the Museo dei Campionissimi.
On Friday, March 21, at 2:00 PM, at Campo Coni, Avis Ciclismo will organize La Mini Classicissima, an event dedicated to young cyclists. In the afternoon, in Piazza della Vittoria, from 2:00 PM, the anticipation for the bike check-in and official presentation of the 25 teams participating in the Milano-Sanremo will be enriched by the presence of Veloclub Belgioioso cyclists in vintage outfits. At 5:00 PM, the professional teams will be accompanied on stage by young cyclists from Upol Lungavilla.
Finally, on the morning of Friday, March 21, in the Mezzabarba council hall, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, the Federal Council of the FCI (Italian Cycling Federation) leadership will take place, a significant event that confirms Pavia’s role as a key player in the national sports scene.
A rich and varied program that will lead the city to the grand event on March 22, when the Milano-Sanremo will officially set off from Pavia, bringing with it the magic of the Classicissima di Primavera.
