Cycling from Aprica to Val Belviso

Highest point 2320 mTotal elevation gain 1550 mTotal elevation loss 1550 mTotal climb 18 kmTotal descent 16,5 kmTotal distance 25,4 kmDuration 6-8 hCycling rate (%) 80% This route extends wholly through a valley belonging to the Orobic Alps.  Val  belviso  is  the  last  eastern  valley,  it  is  long,  deep  and  nar-row, but along the path going south from Alpe Magnolta to Passo di Venerocolo it seems bright and wide. The outline of Monte Torena  –  the  last  high  peak  of  Orobic  Alps  –  dominates  the  other  side  westwards reflecting its shape into the waters of the huge artificial lake on the valley bottom. Once you get to the pass dividing us from the  Province  of  bergamo,  you  will  find  some  alpine  lakes  wedged  among  the  rocks  and  the  grassy  small  hills.  The  descent  runs  on  a  trail at first and then turns into a dirt road through the whole valley, both alongside the lake and under the dam. In San Paolo the Rifugio Cristina is a nice place to grab calories and shelter. You can  start  from  the  car  park  nearby  Magnolta  ski  runs  and  take  the dirt road climbing up to the left of the cableway. The sign indicates  Malga  Magnolta  and  Passo  Venerocolo.  You  can  easily  cycle on the first half of the uphill dirt road, which then gets much steeper  from  the  mountain  huts  in  Corna  Alta  (1457  m)  to  the  finish  of  the  cableway  (1870  m),  so  that  you  may  need  to  carry  your  MTb.  This  is  a  challenging  ascent  but  in  summertime  you  can  use  the lift up to Magnolta. Halfway up the second ski lift, at 1940 meters, the track becomes a flat trail, which goes into the wood, turns south and enters Val belviso. you have to ride for about 13 km on a flat path going sometimes gently uphill, going past Malga Magnola (1997 m) and crossing the Valle del latte and the Valle di Pisa.  You have  to  pay  attention  to  some  exposed  stretches.  The  first  part  of  the  descent  from  Passo  di  Venerocolo  (2314  m)  to  the  dirt  road  at  2000 meters above Malga di Campo (1816 m) is steep and not very flowing. The downhill ride alongside the artificial lake and through the  remaining  part  of  Val  belviso  does  not  hinder  your  fun.  The  route ends with the ascent on a paved road from Ponte Ganda (906 m) to the resort town of Aprica.

Ski Museum

Aprica is home to a unique museum: the Ski and Mountain Museum. Its history began in 2006, when Elio Negri decided to put together a collection not to be missed by lovers of the sport. Here it is indeed possible to trace the evolution of skiing, from the first rudimentary wooden skis to modern race skis. Among the most interesting pieces are a pair of wooden skis from the 1890s, among the oldest in the world; skis used by Zeno Colò, the Olympic alpine skiing champion; and numerous downhill models from the 1960s and 1970s, with their sinuous and colorful shapes. In 2023, the museum moved to 150 Corso Roma, above the Infopoint

Gallery of Emotions in Nature

The Gallery of Emotions in Nature is a kind of Visitor Center in the village, within which a number of mostly living "dioramas" representing specific places and evocative moments have been created.   The intention is to arouse in those who observe them, special emotions, and this is where the choice of the name comes from. Upon entering, after the reception, an evocative path begins with the representation of an autumn landscape crowned by the presence of an animatron representing theHomo selvadego of all places and times. A character who lived in the past between reality and legend. It is intended to attribute, to the one present in the diorama, the quality of not only being a savage isolated from the rest of the people, but of a wise, a nonconformist, a good guy, who came from no one knows where and was also able to teach the inhabitants arts and crafts. Immediately afterwards a spring of water is encountered. Continuing on, there are two reconstructions of mountain landscapes, one summer with streams and a pond and the other winter. Below is another enchanting spring scenic painting with two lumberjacks intent on cutting down a tall tree as it was once done, without the use of modern chainsaws. In this very diorama, an ant farm is visible with live ants and section of their underground cells or inside the domed protection of the nest. The walk inside the Gallery of Emotions continues with the opportunity to observe inside a large chest of drawers some collections of insects, minerals and gems. All of a sudden, one enters the Alpine Prairie Hall to admire a faithful reconstruction of the typical environment above 2,000 meters above sea level, an alpine lake of more than 11 thousand liters with live trout and even a "milk hut" with an adjacent pond; underground marmot burrows with summering rooms, hibernation chambers, latrines and even "cemeteries" are also visible. Leaving the Alpine Prairie Hall, an autumn painting with chestnut and hazelnut groves and sunset can be seen as some deer bray in their "mating season" and some gnomes observe visitors. This is a section intended especially for preschool children to tell them about nature in the form of a fairy tale. Leaving the gnomes, one almost enters an attic where a pair of barn owls are raising their chicks and moonlight enters through a roof hatch. Continuing on, there is a limited visit to a reconstruction of a mine that takes us inside an underground limestone cave with stalactites and stalagmites. All these described settings are crowned by some monitors, also interactive, with naturalistic images and assisted by background music and noises and the possibility of listening to trivia directly from your smartphone. The scenic naturalistic paintings are by Artist Alcide Pancot. The visit does not end now, but one can visit an additional very bright room where some amphibians, rodents and reptiles are bred. Finally, one can enter the Hall of Sensations, a small cinema where one can watch rotating films and experience exciting sensations such as, for example, simultaneously hearing and seeing the thunderstorm, the wind, the voices of animals, and in addition other wonders that Nature offers us on a daily basis and which, often, because of our busy lives, we fail to "enjoy."
