Lake Gleno

Nestled between the majestic peaks of the Bergamo Alps, Lake Gleno stands like an Alpine jewel set in tranquillity and serenity. Located in the picturesque Gleno valley in the province of Bergamo, this alpine lake offers an authentic experience for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the unspoilt beauty of nature.      Lake Gleno is an artificial lake whose history is marked by a tragic event in 1923, when the banks of the dam built to generate electricity collapsed and the resulting flood was devastating.  The hamlet of Gleno and the nearby Villa dam were submerged by water and mud, causing extensive damage and the death of as many as 356 people.  After the accident, the Gleno reservoir was never rebuilt, and the surrounding area was abandoned.  Nature has gradually reclaimed the area, and now Laghetto del Gleno is a tourist destination for hikers and those wishing to explore the area and learn about its history.  Lake Gleno is an ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding nature. Well-marked trails wind through the woods and mountains, leading visitors to breathtaking views and vantage points.  Hiking enthusiasts will find pleasant routes to follow, from the more leisurely and accessible ones to the more challenging one for the more experienced. Lake Valcanale is also a birdwatcher and nature photographer’s paradise. The biodiversity of the area attracts a variety of bird species, offering the opportunity to get close to wildlife and capture unique shots of these charming creatures.  With the cold season, Lake Gleno turns into a wonderful landscape blanketed by snow. The peace and quiet at that time of year add a magical atmosphere to the lake, inviting romantic walks in the snow and offering opportunities for winter sports such as cross-country skiing.

Lake Valcanale

In the picturesque province of Bergamo, in the Lombardy region, an Alpine jewel is waiting to be discovered: Lake Valcanale. Hidden among the majestic mountains of the Seriana Valley this enchanting lake offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.   Unlike other better-known Alpine lakes, Lake Valcanale still holds its authentic magic and quiet atmosphere, offering visitors the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the unspoilt beauty of the surrounding nature.  The crystal-clear waters of the lake are reflected in the changing colours of the surrounding mountains, creating a breathtaking show for the eyes and a soothing atmosphere for the soul. During the summer months, the lake becomes an oasis of coolness, inviting visitors to dive into its clear waters and enjoy moments of pure relaxation on its placid shores.  Water sports enthusiasts will also find an ideal environment for kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing, while those who prefer dry land can explore the surrounding trails, enjoying exciting hikes or mountain biking excursions.  Lake Valcanale is also a paradise for birdwatchers and nature photographers. The rich biodiversity of the area attracts a variety of bird species, including birds of prey, offering nature lovers the opportunity to get close to these fascinating winged inhabitants in a peaceful and friendly setting. Valcanale itself is a charming mountain retreat, with small picturesque villages and traditional chalets dotting the surrounding slopes.  Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the unique atmosphere of mountain life, savouring local delicacies in cosy inns and discovering the authentic hospitality of the locals. In addition, Lake Valcanale is an ideal starting point for exploring other beautiful landmarks of the Seriana Valley.  From mountain peaks to green alpine pastures, the region offers a wide range of stunning landscapes that will meet every traveller's and outdoor enthusiast's needs.  In conclusion, Lake Valcanale is an unmissable destination for those seeking an authentic alpine experience off the beaten tourist track.  This corner of Alpine paradise offers the promise of moments of serenity, outdoor adventures and a deep connection with nature, giving visitors a memorable experience of discovery and wonder.  (Ph: orobie.it, Ricky Testa)

Museum of Arms and Arms-Making Tradition

We are at our final stop on our historical and cultural itinerary of the Trompia Valley.   The remarkable testimony of Gardone's famous arms-making tradition is a visit not to be missed. Housed in Villa Mutti Bernardelli, one of the most important private residences in the area, the museum's exhibition is spread across two floors. The first section is dedicated to the historical evolution of weapons, and features a collection of significant artifacts: although focused mainly on firearms, it also includes bladed weapons and armour. With the aid of video recordings and models, the educational section on the second floor is devoted to the history of the technological processes for weapons manufacturing. Visitors can discover ancient techniques and learn how antiquated work processes were perfected over time.  (Ph: bresciatourism.it)
