Cassano Valcuvia

The name Cassano traces its origins to the Cassius Gentile; some medieval documents also seem to indicate  the presence of a castle in the town,  perhaps to guard an access point to the Valcuvia.

Part of, like many others territories, the Contado di Seprio, it was later annexed to the temporal power of the Bishopric of Como of the Duchy of Milan at the end of the 12th century: it was fiefdom of the Cotta (over which, however, the Visconti had jurisdiction), then Visconti and in the end Litta. After the Spanish and   Austrians dominations, it was annexed, with all Lombardy, to  Piedmont and the Kingdom of Italy: with the unification of the country, the specific "Valcuvia" was added to the name Cassano.

The today's Church of San Giuseppe was perhaps once called San Cassiano. Naturally, it offers great opportunities for those in search of outdoors activities, as well as the possibility of practising sports in the multi-purpose sports centre.  Of great historical interest is the Document Centre of the Cadorna Line and the battle of San Martino (From which you can also explore the trenches). Cassano Valcuvia, in addition, is close to the interconnection point of the bicycle and pedestrian path connecting Lake Maggiore, Valmarchirolo, Varese through Valganna, Valceresio and Lake Lugano.
