In Valtorta, mining shaped the life of the valley for centuries, alongside forges, hammers and mills that harnessed the power of water to process the resources of the mountains.

Today, this heritage can be explored through a visit to the former iron mines of Frèr, restored and reopened to the public, offering an opportunity to discover the places and stories of those who once worked underground.

Where the mountains become a resource
The mines of Valtorta have been documented since at least the Middle Ages and for centuries represented one of the cornerstones of the local economy.
The presence of siderite deposits within the rocks of the valley made it possible to extract iron, while the surrounding forests and waterways provided the resources needed to power furnaces, forges and processing facilities.
Valtorta was also located along the Via del Ferro, an ancient network of routes connecting the mining areas of Upper Val Brembana with Valsassina and the markets beyond the valley.
Mining and ironworking therefore gave rise to a production system involving miners, woodcutters, blacksmiths and charcoal burners.

Inside the Frèr mine
The tour takes visitors into the heart of the former iron mines of Valtorta, in the Frèr area.
The restored route includes approximately 30 metres of tunnels, made safe and illuminated, where visitors can directly observe the underground spaces associated with mining activity.
Outside, the complex also preserves the powder magazine, a building once used to store the gunpowder used in mining, and the guard post, which served as a defensive position during the Second World War.
The mines can be reached with a walk of approximately ten minutes from the road leading to Ceresola.

A mine, a community's story
The history of the Valtorta mines is also a story about people.
During the Second World War, in 1943, the Frèr mines were reopened by Antonio Regazzoni, the site's last owner, with a purpose that went beyond mining activity itself.
Around one hundred young men were employed in extracting lead for the production of weapons, allowing them to remain in the valley rather than being sent to the front or facing deportation.
Today, a commemorative plaque recalls this particular chapter in local history and the actions of those who turned the need for labour into a way of protecting young people from the community.

The memory of the last miner
The more recent history of the mine is also preserved through the testimony of Domenico Regazzoni, the last surviving miner from Valtorta at the time the site reopened in 2025.
His testimony brings to life the everyday reality of a difficult profession, deeply connected to the community: a job marked by hardship and danger, but also by the awareness of being part of an activity that was important to the village.
Entering the tunnels today therefore means encountering not only a place from the past, but also a part of Valtorta's history.

A story that continues beyond the mine
The journey through the area's mining history continues above ground.
Mining activity was closely connected to a network of forges, hammers and mills that harnessed the power of the valley's streams to work iron and produce the tools needed for everyday life. In the Bolgià nature area, some of these buildings have been restored and are now part of the Ecomuseum of Valtorta.
The forge, hammer mill and watermill tell the story of the transformation from raw material to finished product, completing the story that began underground.

A heritage returned to the community
The restoration of the former Valtorta mines is part of a broader project to promote and preserve the town's historical, cultural and environmental heritage. The Ecomuseum of Valtorta, housed in the historic Casa della Pretura, preserves evidence of rural life and traditional crafts from the valley, recreating domestic settings and workshops while displaying tools and objects donated by the local community. The mine, museum, forges, hammer mill and watermill thus become part of a single story: that of a community whose identity was shaped by its relationship with the mountains.

A journey through the memory of Val Brembana
Visiting the Valtorta mines means entering a place where history can still be read in the rock, along the paths and in the buildings that have shaped life in the valley for centuries. An experience combining mining archaeology, local history and landscape, offering an authentic way to discover Val Brembana. The mines are accessible all year round; guided tours are organised in collaboration with the Pro Loco di Valtorta and AltoBrembo.
