This gentle walk, from Colonno to Cadenabbia di Griante, extends for approximately 10 kilometers.

A walking path suitable for everyone in all seasons, it skirts the lake at times and follows the ancient Via Regina halfway up the hillside. The path is well marked with both metal plaques on the pavement and signposts.

Numerous small detours can be taken to explore the small and old historic centers of the hamlets. Along the way, there are numerous refreshment points, both along the lakeside and inland: bars, restaurants, trattorias, picnic areas, parks, and small beach kiosks, where during the warmer months you can stop for a refreshing swim in the lake.

Very well-known is the weekly Tuesday market in Lenno, held on the lakeside known as the Gulf of Venus for its remarkable beauty.

1. From Colonno to Sala Comacina

The route starts in Colonno, a small municipality that still retains the layout of a medieval village, with narrow streets and houses huddled together. The village is divided in two by the Strada Regina, which runs through it.

Once in the village, follow the road signs to the “Greenway del Lago”, taking Via Cappella the up-hill road on the left (car park). The route continues along Via Civetta and it leads to the historic centre.

Once you have passed the downhill road leading to the main square (about 200 meters away) and the ancient bridge on Pessetta stream, you will leave the village centre walking up a slight slope leading towards Sala Comacina.

The itinerary continues on the old path on the mountainside, which was the old Via Regina. This ancient road crosses terraces and small olive groves, offering wonderful views of the lake. After a pleasant walk of approx. 35 minutes, you will arrive in Sala Comacina.

2. From Sala Comacina to Ossuccio

You arrive in Sala Comacina at the Saint Rocco chapel (from where a large stair leads down to the medieval centre and the marina of Sala, approx. 300 meters), the Greenway continues on the ancient Via Regina offering a wonderful view of the lake and of Isola Comacina.

After the bridge on the Premonte valley, you will enter the Municipality of Tremezzina in locality Ossuccio, the old village protected by its Sacred Mountain with its uphill path with the numerous chapels leading up to the Sanctuary of Our Holy Lady of Succour, UNESCO Heritage Site.

History of Isola Comacina
Only island of Lake Como, inhabited since Roman times, Comacina Island is considered an archaeological site of international importance. Of the many churches that were built on it, only the Church of San Giovanni still stands and it is this saint that the “Sagra of San Giovanni” celebrates. The Sagra is a folkloric-religious festival that takes place in late June, widely attended for its spectacular fireworks display. In 1169, the island was torched and completely razed to the ground by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and has never been inhabited since. Today, it is under the tutelage of the Brera Academy.

3. From Ossuccio to Lenno

After the bridge you walk down to Spurano hamlet and cross carefully the state road (parking possibility in this point). You will thus reach the suggestive lakeside area with the church of Saints Giacomo and Filippo (dating back to between the 10th and 12th centuries), with its characteristic bell gable.

Cross the main road once again and take the road that leads up towards the Madonna del Soccorso Sanctuary

At the crossroads with via Castelli, take the road on your right which goes through the village and has a magnificent view on Santa Maria Maddalena bell tower (10th-12th century), whose oratory has been linked since its origins to the ancient medieval hospice for pilgrims now seat of the Antiquarium Museum.

At the round-about descend towards Isola and after the church of SS Eufemia e Vincenzo, cross the main road once again and pass in front of the magnificent entrance gate of Villa Balbiano.

4. From Lenno to Mezzegra

After crossing the bridge on Perlana stream you will reach the hamlet Campo di Lenno with its beautiful little square on the lake.

From here, through narrow alleyways and hidden accesses to the lake, you pass by the peculiar entrance of villa Monastero, then you continue along following the Dosso di Lavedo (little hill on the right) and the camping-site (on the left). After Lavedo hotel, you cross the path that leads towards Villa Balbianello (the villa can be visited just upon reservation) and you continue along the Greenway to Lido di Lenno.

Continue along the lake front passing by historic residences and the square with Santo Stefano church and San Giovanni baptistery. Arriving at Lenno boat pier (for boat services see here).

On Tuesdays, the lakeside comes alive with the renowned market, full of stalls selling everything from clothing to typical local products, which attracts locals and numerous tourists from other towns on the lake.

5. From Mezzegra to Tremezzo

From the pier of Lenno a bridge crossing the Pola torrent leads you through a lake route and then up a cobbled alley-way to the main road. After crossing the main road proceed up a stairway that will get you to Mezzegra. There is a ten minutes climb after which you arrive in Via Pola. Turn right and at the next crossroad turn left in Via Pola vecchia. After San Giuseppe church continue to Sant’Abbondio church: from its square you can enjoy a wonderful view of the lake.

After the church, at the end of a short descent, you'll find the “Casa dei Presepi” (House of the Christmas Crib), a small museum which is open year-round with free admission. You then arrive at the 18th-century Palazzo Brentano, which belonged to a powerful family of local merchants who made their fortune in Northern Europe trading citrus fruits and olive oil. The route continues through the old hamlet of Bonzanigo and comes out onto the road, immediately after Palazzo Rosati.

After a short descent, turn left onto Via delle Gere towards the bridge over the Bolvedro stream.

6. From Tremezzo to Cadenabbia di Griante

After the bridge, a downhill road will lead you in a few minutes back to the lake and the main road and towards the last part of the Greenway that runs along the lakeshore.
After the picturesque hamlet of Bolvedro, pass Villa "La Quiete," then the Church of San Lorenzo, and enter Olivelli Park, where you can admire the splendid fountain and staircase designed by the architect Lingeri.

Once out of the park you will see on your left Villa Mainona seat of the Lake Como Landscape Museum.

Pass by the Tourist InfoPoint and the pier of Tremezzo (for boat services see here) to get to Tremezzo historic centre with its distinguishing arcades with bars and shops.

A pleasant variation (approx. 350 meters) gives you the opportunity to pass through the alleyways of Tremezzo and it will lead you again on the Greenway immediately before the Grand Hotel Tremezzo and the renowned Villa Carlotta.

7. From Cadenabbia di Griante to the end of the Greenway path

Soon after Villa Carlotta, whose garden extends partly into the municipality of Griante, you arrive in Cadenabbia, a hamlet of Griante. Here you find the sumptuous Grand Hotel Cadenabbia: one of the most historic hotels on Lake Como, having once hosted illustrious English nobles, kings, queens, and heads of state, and today a destination for tourists from around the world.

A little further on is the Cadenabbia pier (car ferry service to Bellagio and Varenna), and directly opposite the pier is the small Anglican Church dedicated to the Ascension. The Church, constructed between 1890 and 1891, was the first Anglican church in Italy, built to meet the worship needs of the large English community who settled in Griante in the late 19th century.

The final part of the Greenway is a succession of splendid villas with lush gardens. Continuing along the lakeside, you'll reach a small beach with a bar. This splendid walk ends near the bus stop from which you can take a bus can take you back to Colonno in about 20 minutes.
