Shades of fall - excursions to discover the foliage

When the colours of the landscapes in the area of Sondrio-Valmalenco turns to the shades of red to gold, in the valleys and on the terraced slopes you'll have the chance to observe grape harvesting, apple harvesting or chestnut picking. In the fresh and clear fall days you can admire breath-taking mountain landscapes or take a ride along the vineyards and taste the traditional dishes in one of the local restaurants. The alpine pastures, the paths in Valmalenco and in the surroundings of Sondrio invite visitors to go hiking in a suggestive fall atmosphere. In this season, the area of Sondrio and Valmalenco offers high quality emotions, to be experienced in freedom.

Val d'Arigna mule track — A pleasant path that retraces the ancient mule track. The walking trail departs from Bruga and crosses first the wonderful contrada of Costabella and then a wood, where it reaches some tiny ancient housing clusters now invaded by vegetation. Just beyond the houses, on the right side, you can see the gorge of the Armisa. The path then continues until reaching the old and suggestive contrada of S. Matteo.

Lake Mufulè — At the feet of the Pizzo Scalino, in one of the most relaxing corners of Valmalenco, there’s lake Mufulé (2067 m a.s.l.), framed by larches, dwarf mountain pines and stone pines that the warm colours of autumn make even more fascinating. The lake can be reached from Largone (1756 m a.s.l.) or Sasso dell’agnello (1870 m a.s.l.), located on the road leading from Lanzada to Campomoro.

Lake Palù — A classic excursion of Valmalenco that offers unique emotions in every season. The lake - which can easily be reached from San Giuseppe or Barchi – is surrounded by firs and larches that are often mirrored in the lake.

Terraced vineyard route — A cycle and pedestrian route of rare beauty, which gives the chance to visit the most typical of the Valtellinese rural landscapes, characterized by terraced vineyards, but also by historic civil or religious buildings carrying a symbolic value. In fall, you’ll come across farmes engaged in grape and apple harvesting. You may decide to cover the whole trail by feet/bike or use public transport, comfortable and efficient. The trail is suitable for people of all ages and has no particular difficulties.

The trail of memories and labours

This trail was dedicated to the memory of the inhabitants of Castione who, in the past generations, walked along this path carrying heavy pack baskets. The path linked the highest part of the town to the valley floor and allowed people to carry out farm works.
