Discovering the fairytale village of Christmas Cribs

In winter Gromo reveals one of its most charming sides: a mediaeval village that, with its stones and alpine panoramas becomes the ideal setting in which to enjoy the tradition of the Christmas crib.   During the festive season, the village comes to life with lights and a Christmas atmosphere, thanks to a circuit that transforms the centre of the village into an itinerary dedicated to art, history and to the magic of this period. The Christmas crib route takes in the narrow streets, courtyards and steps in the setting of one of Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages. The Cribs on show, including hand-crafted displays created for the occasion, pieces from different parts of the world, and donations from private collections, blend seamlessly into the mediaeval setting, enhanced by stone arches and details that evoke centuries of history and tradition. Between one view and another, the scene opens out on the fir woods continuing up to Spiazzi di Gromo, the mountain resort overlooking the village which becomes a starting point for ski slopes and snow-covered trails in winter. In the heart of the village, are its landmarks such as Castello Ginami, the Church of San Gregorio, Torre Gananderio and the stunning Piazza Dante.  Gromo, once known as the ‘little Toledo’ due to its traditional iron working and weaponry making, is also now home to a magic that is more intimate but equally charming: that of a village which becomes an open-air theatre during the Christmas period. The perfect place in which to breathe in the enchantment of a Bergamasque winter, with its traditions, soft lights, and an authentic Alpine village atmosphere.

San Simone: an enchanting snow-covered valley

In the mountains of the Upper Val Brembana, San Simone stands in a large valley, surrounded by the peaks of Mount Cavalle, the Cime di Lemma, the Cima dei Siltri, and Pizzo Rotondo.   Here the snow remains for long periods, protected by the wind and the shadow of the peaks, transforming the landscape in a white embrace that is perfect for exploring on snowshoes. In this setting, nature is the star, and every step is a different way to experience the magic of winter. The snow-covered slopes are safe, quiet spaces that are just perfect for snowshoeing and for people who want to explore the mountains at their own pace. Wide mule tracks and beaten paths take you up to extraordinary panoramic views, like the San Simone Pass or the Lemma Pass, which offer glimpses over the Val Terzera and the surrounding peaks. From the car park at the San Simone ski lifts, put on your snowshoes and follow the mule tracks into the valley. The tracks will take you to the Baita del Camoscio, where there are different possible itineraries to follow, from the shorter to the more difficult routes. Wherever you look, the scenery is stunning: the snow-topped mountains are reflected on the white slopes, while the evergreen woods and meadows create a smooth contrast of colours and lights. Snowshoe trails are suitable for everyone as well as being a simple way to experience nature in the winter. Accompanied by an alpine guide, you can walk safely from pine woods, to gentle ridges and panoramic points that offer different views over the Orobic Alps. And if you want to, then you can always end the day by tasting typical cuisine from the Val Brembana, adding the warmth of local tradition to your experience on the snow.

Mount Alben, snow-covered expanses and moonscapes

The bright, imposing north face of Mount Alben - with its lasting winter covering of compact snow - dominates the valley. It is this exposure that guarantees ideal conditions for the whole season. Skiing is available here through to late spring, in the vast, silent setting that makes this experience on the snow so unique.   The Conca dell’Alben valley contains small, medium-level slopes that are perfect for beginners, families and skiers looking to perfect their technique in an unhurried setting. The lift can be reached from Oltre il Colle and it offers skiing in open country, with the profile of Mount Alben always in the background.  As well as alpine skiing, there is also room for Nordic skiing. These slopes are home to one of the most stunning cross-country ski trails in Lombardy: 16 km from Zambla Alta to Valpiana taking in fir woods, clearings and offering views that open out on the Upper Val Serina. One section of the route is also lit for night-time skiing, offering a different, fascinating way in which to experience the mountains. Oltre il Colle completes the offer with snowshoeing routes for everyone, taking you through the woods, over gentle ridges and on to panoramic viewing points where you can enjoy the scenery in all its beauty. It is a nearby location, easily reached and ideal for your authentic winter mountain experience on a human scale.

The charm of Branzi, with its woods, sunsets and local cuisine

Branzi, in the heart of Val Brembana, is where time follows a different rhythm, to the sound of rivers and the rustle of the woods. The village nestles among the mountains where it is the ideal destination for walks, hikes and snowshoeing for all tastes.   Branzi combines the beauty of natural landscapes with its picturesque centre, where the houses with their slate roofs, the quiet squares and stone bridges create views straight off a picture postcard. Along the route of the Borleggia river, with its bridges and cobbled streets, you can follow trails to take you into woods, the Branzi waterfall, and historic wards, with panoramic views over the surrounding mountains.  Every walk offers stunning views and, in the winter, is a perfect opportunity for a snowshoe outing immersed in the silence of the snow-covered woods. And the village has even more colour to offer at sunset. Branzi is also home to taste and tradition: it is here that the cheese of the same name, used in many local recipes - including polenta taragna  - is made. It is still possible to purchase typical local dairy produce, including yoghurt, cream, and other valley specialities. The village is definitely the perfect stop for combining your discovery of the mountains with the pleasure of fine dining. The area around Branzi takes in some enchanting panoramic views, including Lake Carona, where nature and silence blend together to offer a regenerating experience and the village of Cornello dei Tasso, where history and tradition come together in a setting that combines cultural discover and unique landscapes.

New Year’s Eve Torchlight parade in Colere

The night of New Year’s Eve comes alight with atmosphere and tradition in Colere. The village, located on the slopes of Presolana and Mount Ferrante, celebrates the arrival of the new year with a beautiful torchlight parade, with its stunning procession of lights at the foot of the mountains.   On 31 December, as well as the torchlight parade, the nearby Schilpario, comes to life in the late afternoon, with snacks, distribution of torches, and a walk up to Paradiso, followed by the torchlight parade on skis, then a firework display. Colere still has an atmosphere all its own: although it has experienced a recent boom in tourism, it still preserves all the authentic heart of a mountain village, with its meadows, traditions, and panoramic views, all waiting to be discovered.  Its mountains are a point of reference for winter sports: the great exposure and snow covering make it a great place for alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and snow activities for a large part of the season. The atmosphere of the village creates the perfect setting for end of year activities and winter thrills at altitude.

Monte Aga
