The Spongada is one of the most famous gastronomic sweets of Valle Camonica, an authentic temptation for all the dessert lovers. Every year Breno, a small village situated in the middle of the Valley, celebrates their typical sweet by organizing a dedicated fair, where you can taste the original dessert and its local recipe. Discover what Spongada is

The Spongada is a soft and fluffy focaccia covered with sugar. To cook a perfect Spongada, it is necessary to leave the dough to rest for 18 hours then, once you have divided the dough into balls, leave them to rest for another 4 to 5 hours. A long job…but worth it thanks to the taste explosion.

The “Fèra della Spongada” and the variation from Breno

Conceived more than ten years ago, the “Fèra della Spongada” in Breno takes place on the Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter. This date has been chosen because of the origins of this sweet, once meant for Easter time and now easily found at any time of the year.

At the fair, the Spongada is presented as a variation from Breno: the Spongada is in fact combined with salami, creating a really interesting “savoury- sweet” effect.

The fair takes place in Piazza del Mercato from 9 am: it starts with the opening of the gastronomic stand, the sale of Spongada and of the typical products and continues until 5 pm with tastings, animations and shows, and finally with the award ceremony of the competition “Spongada d’oro de Bre” (the golden Spongada of Breno) aimed at private amateur bakers. For the little ones there are inflatables, balloon sculptures and face painting.

How to get and what to do in Breno

Breno is easily accessible from Brescia and from the Lake Iseo along the SS42 road in the direction of Edolo / Ponte di Legno. Those who prefer public transport can use the train line Trenord Brescia-Iseo-Edolo, which also stops in Breno.

Apart from the tasting of Spongada, we recommend you not to miss the richness of Breno’s cultural heritage, such as the Parish Church of St. Salvatore, the Church of St. Antonio, with frescoes by Romanino, and the Castle of Breno, a monument rich in history, which is also the great pride for the community of Breno. These days the Castle is opened only on request by contacting the Proloco.
