From the caves to paradise

From the Valganna Caves, you’ll cross the valley up to lake Ganna before reaching Boarezza. Then, from the Cadorna Line – a thick network of military fortifications – you’ll reach the top of Mount Piambello from where you can enjoy the beautiful views of Valceresio and the lake. Next, you’ll go downhill to Sasso Paradiso and then to Marzio. This section of the route is hard but worth the effort. And after a stopover at Belvedere, it will be time to get back by taking the historical uphill route of the Cycling world championships. Arrival at Chiappucci-Panizza. Unesco fossils between Italy and Switzerland

From the lakeside promenade in the characteristic small town of Porto Ceresio on the new cycle track and gravel tracks, the route then starts to climb through the Unesco area’s most important fossil sites on Monte San Giorgio. After a few sections through trenches and spectacular panoramas it then continues to Sasso Caldo, where the Besanosaurus, one of the world’s most important fossils, was found.Across the historic border between Italy and Switzerland it descends into the latter as far as Meride, a beautiful pristine town and site of a fossil museum which was renovated and enlarged in 2012 by architect Mario Botta. The return journey is on an educational footpath which returns to Cà del Monte and Besano for a visit to the museum on the Italian side. Mount Orsa

Mount Orsa is a mountain of almost 1000 meters on the Luganese pre-Alpine ridge, the third highest in Valceresio after Mount Piambello and Mount Pravello.  From a historical point of view, it is certainly interesting due to the presence of the trenches of the Cadorna Line.  The lanscape offered by this peakes, in addition to the interesting karst system of which they are composed (caving is also possible!), is ideal for sports loved by many: climbing (for example on the 'Sunset Cliffs' site), cycling and walking tours, skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing.
