Piazzi Observatory

Located in the municipality of Ponte in Valtellina, loc. San Bernardo, the Piazzi Astronomical Observatory conducts scientific research and organizes guided tours.   As far as scientific research is concerned, the observatory collaborates with the Minor Planet Center (MPC) for the study of so-called "minor planets," comets and asteroids of greater or lesser size. Guided tours, on the other hand, include a lecture on an astronomical theme followed by a visit to the dome with observations of the most interesting and visible objects at that time. The Observatory is named after Giuseppe Piazzi, a native of Ponte in Valtellina and a great astronomy scholar who in 1803 and 1814 saw his study catalogs awarded by theAcadèmie des Sciences in Paris.

Retorbido Big Bench #124

Created by the Rotary Club Valle Staffora in collaboration with the Nuova Pro Loco and the Municipality of Retorbido, the Big Bench, the giant bench, is part of the Big Bench Community Project, number 124 of the project. The Big Bench located in Retorbido was installed in the airy and peaceful tranquility of the "colle delle Torricelle" (hill of Torricelle), from where you can enjoy an enviable panorama that spans from the Maritime Alps to the Brescia Prealps. From the hill, you can enjoy incredible views of the surrounding vineyards, the Madonna del Monte of Rivanazzano, and Retorbido itself. The more keen observers claim that, in particular weather conditions, it is even possible to see the monastery of the Sacra di San Michele, an iconic symbol of the Piedmont region, located at the entrance to the Val di Susa. To reach the bench, enter Retorbido from the roundabout of Bressana-Salice Terme, cross the village until you reach Via Torricelle. We suggest parking your car in Via Meardi and walking up Via Torricelle to the bench. The bench is also accessible by bike from the nearby GreenWay Voghera Varzi. For those who love walks and landscapes, for those who love running and wellness, 5 km of pure nature and relaxation with L'ANELLO DI RETORBIDO, 5 KM BETWEEN BIG BENCH, NATURE, AND LANDSCAPES.

Robbio

Located along the Via Francigena, Robbio was in the Middle Ages a Vercelli outpost within the territory of Pavia. Its many Romanesque churches evoke the former splendor of this Lomellina village. In Robbio stands the Monastery of San Valeriano, a Romanesque-style church founded in the early 12th century by the powerful Lomellina family of the Besate, who made it dependent on the Burgundian Abbey of Cluny. The monastery was one of the hospitality centers for pilgrims traveling along the Via Francigena. The Church of San Pietro, Romanesque and dating from the last quarter of the 12th century, features a façade built by the Comacine Masters. Inside, 16th-century frescoes attributed to Tommaso da Mortara can be admired. Next to the church once stood a shelter for pilgrims. The Church of San Michele shows both Romanesque and Gothic elements. Its façade is decorated in the style typical of 15th-century Lombard art. Inside, there are 16th-century frescoes from the Vercelli school, among which stands out the Madonna enthroned, attributed to Bernardo Lanino. The Castle of Robbio, located in the center of the town, was built in the 14th century. It has a quadrangular layout with an open courtyard and a beautiful tower known as the Torre Sanner. The Oratory of San Rocco is a small rural church, probably erected during the terrible plague of 1578 in an isolated and marshy area, which remained so until the 19th century and was used as a lazaretto. Inside, there are frescoes and a beautiful Madonna and Child with Saints Roch and Sebastian, dating back to the same period as the construction of the chapel.
