Tower of Baradello Castle

Baradello Castle, the symbol of the Spina Verde Park, is a fortification built for emperor Frederick Barbarossa on the remains of older buildings.   The Castle was built in a strategic location and, thanks to this position, overlooking the town, it could control the whole of the surrounding area. It was demolished after 1526 by Spanish invaders. Inside the tower it is possible to visit a museum, with displays of archaeological finds from excavations conducted at Baradello by architect Luigi Mario Belloni during the 1970s. It is also possible to see materials recovered during the digs held in the years 2008-2010, under the direction of Como Civic Museum, with the concession of the Ministry. The new layout is in fact the result of close collaboration with the Archaeological Museum, Spina Verde Park and the Superintendence.   A panoramic refuge in the midst of history and beauty The Spina Verde Park is an authentic piece of heaven on earth for lovers of long walks in nature, thanks to the well-marked trails, many picnic areas, and wealth of biodiversity when it comes to plants and animals. Setting out from Piazza Camerlata and along a path through the oaks, chestnuts and flower-filled clearings, it is possible to reach the Tower in about 20 minutes. Along the route there is no shortage of old walls, watchtowers and of course, charming panoramic points from which to admire the city and the lake. Once at the Tower, it is essential to go up to the panoramic terrace, which is accessed on a stairway, inside and out, which allows you to look over the whole city of Como, the Po Valley and on a clear day, the Swiss Alps.
