Inverno E Monteleone

The fifteenth century Inverno e Monteleone castle complex was founded by the Knights Hospitaller at the time of the Crusades. It was built on a rectangular plan with a central courtyard, towers at the corners, moat and ravelin. Two of the towers have square bases and the other two are cylindrical, an unusual choice in the Pavia area. Much altered over the centuries it maintained its importance at length and, up to recent times, its bell marked the rhythms of the day from the tallest tower.

Retorbido

Known in Roman times by the name Litibium, the town of Retorbido was given by Lombard king Liutprand to Pavia monastery San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro. Long at the centre of bitter territorial disputes, in 1753 it passed to the Savoys. It is to this period that its neo-classical buildings such as Chiesa Parocchiale della Natività della Beata Vergine Maria and Palazzo Negrotto Cambiaso Durazzo Pallavicini (18th century) date.

Bagnaria

Perched in a panoramic position on the right side of the valley Bagnaria has retained the appearance of a medieval town with houses in grey stone and narrow, winding alleyways which climb steeply to the sacristy of the Romanesque church of San Bartolomeo. In the early nineteenth century an earthquake destroyed the ancient fortress leaving only its quadrilateral plan and a low wall visible.
