Action sports in Lombardy

From Lake Garda to Val Brembana, 5 action sports destinations offering a hefty dose of adrenaline

Rafting, sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, kitesurfing in Lombardy? Come with us to discover the lakes and rivers where doing sport means lots of excitement and fun.

1. Rafting on the river Adda in Valtellina
Did you say rafting? In Valtellina, along the river Adda, just over an hour from Milan, you can paddle in a unique natural setting. The most adrenaline-filled stretch is certainly the one along the III and IV degree rapids in Boffetto near Piateda. For a family experience we recommend a quieter route, the one that connects Piateda to Castione, where the ride in a RIB along the bends of the river Adda gives wonderful views over the terracing of the surrounding countryside. And it is worth pointing out out that throughout the summer at Castione Andevenno you can paddle in the moonlight. To carry out this activity safely we advise you always to contact an experienced centre.

2. Lake Garda, by sail
Constant winds assure ideal conditions for a day’s sailing on Lake Garda, home to numerous international regattas. On the Lombard shore, Gargnano, a delightful village rich in history, has been one of the centres of excellence since 1951, the year of the first edition of the prestigious Centomiglia regatta. Thanks to Centomiglia, during the month of September Lake Garda becomes the setting for one of the most important sailing competitions in Europe, and indeed for the longest race in European inland waters. Ready to set sail?

3. Canoeing and rafting in Val Brembana
Rafting or canoeing offer two great ways to discover Val Brembana, with a series of natural slides and gorges able to make you feel a unique thrill! There are so many opportunities, as plenty of well-equipped centres with certified guides who organise safe trips along the Brembo. The longest route is 12 km. It starts from the village of San Giovanni Bianco. You pass through San Pellegrino Terme, carried along the waters under medieval bridges, before finally arriving at Zogno.

4. Windsurfing on Lake Iseo
Lake Iseo could be defined a natural gym thanks to the currents that make water sports here especially exciting. Marone, Pisogne and Lovere are the ideal destinations for windsurfers. If you are a beginner, we recommend you arrange to be accompanied by a certified guide. Technical equipment, transport and insurance can be provided by the instructors. Is the wind in your favour?

5. Kitesurfing on Lake Como
Following the wind with a board at your feet, gliding over the water pulled by a kite in the sky? Kitesurfing, version 2.0 of windsurfing, is one of the most intense sports on Lake Como. The ideal area is the Alto Lario. Another strategic point is along the shore of Mandello. On the lake there are three federal clubs: Palù Vela Surf in Gera Lario, Orza Minore in Dervio and Marvelia Skiffsailing in Dongo. For enthusiasts the place for kiters that gives the greatest buzz is Colico where the breeze pushes hard at the kites.

The trail of memories and labours

This trail was dedicated to the memory of the inhabitants of Castione who, in the past generations, walked along this path carrying heavy pack baskets. The path linked the highest part of the town to the valley floor and allowed people to carry out farm works.
