Mortirolo Pass
Itinerary up to the Mortirolo Pass from Mazzo
If you want to confront the history of cycling, yourself and your sore legs, then the Mortirolo from Mazzo di Valtellina is the one for you.
We are talking about one of the toughest climbs in the world and one that connects Valtellina with Valle Camonica. A frighteningly challenging 12.4 km, starting at 552 m in Mazzo and finishing at 1852 m, with an average gradient of 10.5 percent and peaks exceeding 20 percent. The hardest section is encountered after about 4 km, when you leave behind the church dedicated to St. Matthew.
Right here the gradients become inhuman and many cyclists have to put their foot down. On the Mortirolo Pass was born the myth of Marco Pantani who was able to detach, for the first time, the great Miguel Indurain. It was the year 1994, and on these ramps exploded one of the greatest climbers in the history of cycling.
