The Pian dei Cavalli from Campodolcino
The Pian dei Cavalli is one of the most beautiful places in the Spluga Valley, and not only because of the breathtaking views from this fantastic natural balcony located more than 2,000 meters above sea level.
In fact, this wide plateau that separates the Starleggia valley from the Febbraro valley is home to several archaeological sites where artifacts dating back to the Mesolithic era have been found.
This tour takes you on a discovery of these sites. To reach them a long climb awaits you, quite challenging, but without extremely prohibitive slopes. Your fatigue will certainly be repaid by the splendid views of the Spluga Valley and the surrounding mountains: the Stella lace, the Groppera lace, the Emet lace and the Suretta group.
Start in the town of Campodolcino and proceed toward Isola, skirting its beautiful lake. Start climbing on the narrow paved road until you reach the hamlet of Ca' Raseri. From here take the dirt road until you reach Baituscio (Baitusch in dialect), a group of huts where you can sometimes buy cheese supplied directly by local producers.
Continue to Pian dei Cavalli among the wonderful unspoiled nature of these high mountain places. After taking a break to admire the view and recover your energy, begin the descent, fun and never too technical, to return to Campodolcino via the picturesque village of Starleggia.
