The Spluga Pass
One of the most important passes in the Alps, known since antiquity for its easy transit and also featured in the Giro d'Italia
The route of the present road follows the route of the one built in 1800 by the Austrians, while the Roman-era Via Spluga, used until the Hapsburg intervention, was built at the end of the 1st century AD.
Stories of trade, of armies, but also of tourism: in fact, as early as the 1700s various artists, in full Grand Tour spirit, were fascinated by the wild and impervious landscape of these places.
Today the Spluga Pass continues to fascinate tourists and is one of Valchiavenna 's classic road cycling climbs.
Leaving Chiavenna, the route gradually gains altitude until it reaches the Campodolcino plain that precedes the historic ten hairpin bends leading to Pianazzo.
Shortly after, you meet the junction that on the right leads to Madesimo, while on the left begin the hairpin bends and tunnels of the Andossi from where there is a beautiful view of the entire upper Vallespluga. You then reach the artificial lake of Montespluga, the village of the same name, and the last steep hairpin bends that climb to the Spluga Pass.
