From Santa Caterina Valfurva, in Valtellina, or from Ponte di Legno, in Valle Camonica, we drive along Gavia provincial road 29 to Rifugio Berni at 2,541 m, which is about a couple of kilometers from the Gavia Pass at 2,618 m.

Leaving the car in the parking areas between the hut, the small church and the monument to the Fallen of the Great War, we begin our approach to the Sforzellina Glacier, between the Corno dei Tre Signori (3,360 m) and the Sforzellina peak (3,099 m).
We practically follow the nature-didactic trail, inaugurated a few years ago, that leads to the discovery of such a natural laboratory as the glacier.
From the road, following the former military mule track, we descend slightly and cross the Gavia Torrent (2,520 m). A fork is soon encountered and to the right we continue in the direction of the Monte Ortles Skiatori Battalion Bivouac. Some hairpin bends lead us near the disused structure of the former Rifugio Gavia, formerly Italian barracks at the time of World War I.

We find ourselves in the middle of a wild environment, typical of high altitude. At a subsequent fork, we ignore this time the signs for the bivouac and keep right again to continue on the nature trail. This is what we do again shortly afterwards, setting out for the third time on the right-hand trail (marker number S552). The trail is obvious, paved in places and directs us to a rocky rampart. A small gully with some hairpin bends allows us to cross it, finding ourselves in a hollow of moraine scree. We cross it, needless to say, once again to the right and ascend it on the left side to the small lake formed by the glacier basin.
Here the trail of the route becomes less marked, but thanks to the markers we easily reach the front of the vedretta. Our hike, which is not difficult, ends here at 2,810 meters above sea level.
To continue through snow and ice, however, you need to know how to move and have the right equipment.
