From Coca to Curò
Downhill we walk along the path with CAI trail marker no. 303 until we cross the small concrete bridge.
A little further on, it crosses the path that climbs from Valbondione; we neglect it and bend left to approach the steep grassy slopes of the basin that welcomes the refuge.
Reaching them, the trail begins to gain moderate elevation, allowing us instead strong views of the upper Seriana Valley, the Lizzola ski demesne and the foothills of Pizzo Redorta. A wide bend sets us in a northeast direction, and on this we reach the outlet of the Polledrino Valley, which originates up there near Bocchetta dei Camosci, the antechamber to Pizzo Coca. The route has little gradient and meanders airily between the valleys that precede Passo del Corno, which we reach with a final overhang (2,200 m, 1h 10' from the refuge). Monte Corno is very close.
From the pass, we descend slightly into the opposite little valley and, with a half-steep traverse on the grassy slopes, where it is also easy to spot colonies of chamois, we reach that stonier and more exposed section of trail, equipped with metal chains that make it easier to cross. This is followed by an easy half slope that leads to the base of a rocky, detrital gully, which you climb with the help of additional metal chains.
We thus reach a grassy plateau strewn with huge boulders and often "livened up" by goats and sheep, representing the highest point of this traverse (2,325 m, 1 hr from Passo del Corno).
A short stop allows us to sweep over the surrounding mountains, from those of Valmorta, northward, to Pizzo Recastello dominating the Barbellino basin, already visible below us with the Valmorta basin. Southward, below, the village of Valbondione, half-hidden by the sharp and rugged Pinnacolo di Maslana. Now begins a steep descent to the Valmorta Dam, at first along the ridge and then moving left on grassy slopes.
The path meanders among rhododendrons and small flowers and, with a long series of switchbacks that make the descent less heavy, you reach the bottom of the Valmorta, where you cross the stream and head toward the small dam. Past the detrital valley floor, you climb back up to the Dam Guard House, from which you enter, to the left, the mule track that skirts the rock walls of the service tunnel dug by Enel.
A stepped descent and a subsequent ascent lead near the private EPO hut, from which you are shortly at the cozy Corò hut.
