Piani di Bobbio (LC)
Accessible from the nearby locality of Ceresola di Valtorta, the Piani di Bobbio are one of the most popular natural destinations in the Lombardy Prealps. In just a few minutes, the cable car takes visitors from the valley floor up to the plateau, where a landscape of mountain pastures, limestone cliffs and sweeping views of the surrounding mountains unfolds.
During the warmer months, trails of varying difficulty allow visitors to explore the area on foot, while mountain huts and refreshment points offer opportunities to stop and enjoy the natural surroundings.
The area can be reached by car as far as Ceresola, where the gondola lift station is located. The Piani di Bobbio are also the starting point for numerous hiking routes leading to the peaks of the Orobie and Valsassina.
From the mine to the Ecomuseum of Valtorta (BG)
From the mine to the Ecomuseum of Valtorta (BG)
The journey continues with the mining heritage of Valtorta, now enhanced through the Ecomuseum and the restoration of the former tunnels.
A visit to the mines offers the opportunity to enter the places where mining took place and learn about the work of the people who spent generations excavating the mountains in search of iron.
But to truly understand this history, it is necessary to return to the surface: mining was only one part of a much broader system that included the processing of the ore, the production of tools and the traditional crafts of the valley.
The Ecomuseum of Valtorta (BG)
In the centre of the village, the Ecomuseum of Valtorta is the main reference point for discovering the community's culture and traditional crafts. It is housed in the historic Casa della Pretura, a building dating back to the 15th century that preserves the atmosphere and character of the past. Inside, traditional domestic spaces and craft workshops have been recreated, with tools and objects linked to rural life and work. It is the ideal place to understand what can be encountered along the route: the mine was not an isolated element, but an integral part of the valley's economic and social life.
Bolgià Nature Area (BG)
A valley of traditional crafts.
A short distance from the centre, the Bolgià Nature Area brings together some of the most significant traces of Valtorta's traditional production activities.
Here visitors can find a hammer mill, watermill and forge, arranged along the watercourse and connected by a system of channels that made it possible to harness the power of water.
Today part of Valtorta's museum itinerary, the complex shows how water became a source of energy for working iron, grinding grain and supporting the community's everyday activities.
The Bolgià Hammer Mill, Watermill and Forge (BG)
At the hammer mill, the power of water drove the large hammer used to work metal, together with forges, grinding wheels, anvils and other tools. In the nearby watermill, the water wheel powered millstones and pestles used to process maize, rye and barley. Two different activities, powered by the same resource: the water of the mountains. Next to the hammer mill and watermill stands the iron forge, part of the same historic complex.
Here, the story of the mine takes on a new meaning: the iron extracted from the mountain was not simply a raw material, but was transformed into objects, tools and working implements.
The forge thus completes the journey that began in the tunnels, showing the transformation from rock to worked metal.
Among the hamlets of Valtorta
After following the traces of traditional work, the itinerary continues through the historic centre of Valtorta and its hamlets.
The village retains the character of an ancient mountain settlement, with stone buildings, lanes and mule tracks that once connected the different parts of the village and led towards the places where people worked.
Walking through the hamlets brings visitors back to the everyday dimension that completes the story of the mine: this was where the people who worked in the tunnels, forges and forests, as well as in agriculture, lived.
The Church of Sant’Antonio Abate alla Torre (BG)
Among the historic landmarks of the village is the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate alla Torre, a small 14th-century church located in the Torre hamlet. Its presence adds an artistic and religious dimension to the route, showing that Valtorta's heritage is not only connected to work and production activities.
The church lies along one of the historic routes crossing the village and leading towards the Via del Ferro, making it a natural part of the itinerary..
The Val Parina Waterfalls (BG)
Approximately 10 km from Valtorta, the Val Parina Waterfalls offer one of the most evocative corners of Upper Val Brembana. The route runs through a narrow, wild valley shaped over time by water, which has carved deep gorges into the rock.
Along the trail, the sound of the waterfalls accompanies visitors through woods, rocky cliffs and scenic views of great natural beauty. The excursion is ideal for those wishing to complete their exploration of Valtorta's historical heritage with an immersion in its most authentic natural surroundings.
The waterfalls can be reached by car along the SP6 towards Camerata Cornello (BG), continuing towards the entrance to Val Parina, where hiking trails begin and lead to some of the area's most beautiful viewpoints.
