What’s on in Lombardy: five things to do
Romanticism in Milan, a night of Liszt in Menaggio, Milano Montagna Festival and two events for food connoisseurs. What’s on in Lombardy from 22 to 31 October 2018.
1. EUROPEAN LISZT NIGHT TOUR
Menaggio (Como) | 27 October 2018
Budapest, Utrecht and Weimar: locations of the three best-known piano competitions dedicated to the great Franz Liszt. Every three years, the winners’ European tour stops off in places that meant something to the Maestro. This year, the European Liszt Night Tour (ELNT), will travel to Lake Como for the first time. Liszt stayed there with his lover, Countess Marie d’Agoult. On Lake Como, he became the father of Cosima, future wife of Richard Wagner. He also read the Divine Comedy, which inspired his Dante Sonata. Lose yourself in his music at Villa Vigoni, where Alexander Ullmann, Tomoki Sakata and Alexey Sychev will entertain you on the evening of 27 October. Entry to the piano recital is free on a first-come first-served basis. Phone to book.
Milan | 26 October 2018 – 17 March 2019
Poetry of the sublime, subjectivity and escapism. During the first half of the 19th century, the Romantics gave voice to a new European feeling. Milan was at the forefront: the city of great exhibitions, publishing houses, theatres, Foscolo, Manzoni, Rossini, Hayez and Verdi. A magnificent season that revived the Gallerie d’Italia and Poldi Pezzoli with Romanticismo, the first exhibition to highlight Italy’s contribution to the movement sweeping the Western world. The collection includes approximately 200 works, from pre-Romantic stirrings to the advent of Realism. To set the scene properly, the Italian paintings are joined by indispensable works by William Turner, the Corots and other leading lights on the international scene. Venture into Italy of the past and discover just how modern Milan and those who put it on the map really were.
3. SPOTLIGHT ON CHEESE
Sondrio | 27 - 28 October 2018
Calcium, iron and vitamins. There’s no better way to prepare for winter. Cheeses made out of raw (i.e. unpasteurised) mountain milk are a formidable source of nutrients. On 27 and 28 October, you’ll find them all on show in Sondrio, for an annual market expedition that’s a Mecca for food connoisseurs. There’s a packed programme: street cuisine, workshops for children, show-cooking, cheeses in music, a cheese-hour, guided tours and accompanied mountain bike excursions. Treat yourself to a trip in grand style: on 28 October you can travel to Sondrio aboard the Blue Train towed by a steam locomotive with original carriages dating from the 1930s. It leaves from Lambrate, Milano Greco Pirelli, Monza, Carnate and Lecco (Info tel. 338 8577210).
4. MILANO MONTAGNA FESTIVAL
Milan | 22 – 28 October 2018
Films, book presentations, climbing walls and unmissable events with walkers, explorers, free riders, climbers and record-breaking skiers. Those who live by scaling the peaks will be centre stage for four days from 25 to 28 October in Base Milano, Via Bergognone 34. The fourth Milano Montagna Festival will be opened by Andrzej Bargiel from Poland, the first man to descend K2 on skis. He will be followed by a long list of high-altitude heroes. Films planned for the event include international previews of Hoji and Sky Piercer, and some historical masterpieces of mountain cinematography. This year the Festival includes Fuori Festival: a galaxy of events will be staged throughout the city throughout the week from 22 to 28 October.
Milan | 27 – 29 October 2018
Two hundred producers, 100 wine cellars and more than 80 events including cooking demos, wine tastings and talks in the Agorà. Mico Milano Congressi is again hosting Golosaria, three days of Italian flavours. The theme of this 13th festival is “Il buono che fa bene”, or ¬ good things that do you good. Expect to find superfoods, organic wines, gluten-free deserts and many other current food trends. In the Cucine di Strada or street cuisine area you can taste specialities from all over Italy: risotto al mondeghilli, focaccia from Recco, sciatt from Valtellina, panelle and stigghiole. New this year is a partnership with FormaggItalia, which is staging an event within an event dedicated to Italy's best craft food.
