Experience the magic of Christmas in Lombardy

Markets, Nativity scenes, torchlit processions in the mountains ... discover all the events that make Christmas in Lombardy so special. The Torrone di Cremona festival, the great advent calendar lighting the facades of Piazza del Duomo in Milan, Como Città dei Balocchi and a host of other unmissable things to see and do.

CREMONA, TORRONE TO TORRAZZO
Until 16 December
Nougat lovers will welcome the customary yearly Festa del Torrone: Cremona will indulge its sweet tooth until 25 November with more than 250 shows, tastings and cultural events. The programme includes giant constructions made out of torrone, a historical recreation of the marriage between Francesco Sforza and Bianca Maria Visconti, and the Golden Torrone. From 2 December, visitors will be able to enjoy the Christmas markets under the terrace of Piazza Duomo. Decked out with Christmas decorations and an air of enchantment, dozens of stands and stalls will offer nativity scenes from around the world, gastronomic delicacies, local products, gift ideas and decorative items. Still in Cremona, from 14 to 16 December, enjoy the magic of Christmas at a wonderful Country Christmas. This huge alternative celebration with a vintage flavour will involve dozens of dance schools (strictly Country!) from all over the world against the backdrop of a Far West village with its own very special customs, traditions and atmosphere.

BERGAMO, NOT ONE BUT TWO VILLAGES!
Up to 26 December 2018
Eagerly awaited by all ages, 23 November to 26 December will see the appearance of the Christmas Village in Bergamo with cute chalets thronging the appropriately named Piazzale degli Alpini. This is a wonderful opportunity to visit market stalls selling products from all over Italy and abroad. There are plenty of surprises in store for children, including a visit from Santa Lucia and Father Christmas, bearing gifts and sweets for everyone. From 23 November, the magic of Christmas will arrive in the heart of Lower Bergamo: picturesque Piazza Dante will be decorated for Christmas, as will the rest of the old town centre, from Sentierone to Città Alta.

COMO, PURE MAGIC AT CITTÀ DEI BALOCCHI
24 November 2018 – 6 January 2019
Lights, colours, flavours and many (so many) events… Once again Como is about to become the City of “Balocchi” or toys. Until 6 January, the artistic installations of the Como Magic Light Festival will illuminate squares, monuments and the city's special symbolic places. Things not to miss? The skating rink in Piazza Cavour, the Christmas market and the spectacular Christmas tree in Piazza Grimoldi. The 2018 event has plenty of new surprises in store…Como will be the first city (in the world!) to give voice to its monuments with a soundtrack to back the projections. Best way to cross the city? Two little trains, a traditional Christmas train and an all-electric train, will carry visitors to Piazza Verdi from Via Garibaldi.

MILAN, “OH BEJ OH BEJ” TO CHRISTMAS CONCERTS
1 December 2018 – 02 January 2019
The date when Christmas spirit and gift-giving come together in Milan is 7 December, when the city draws on its ancient soul to celebrate its patron, St Ambrose. Traditional markets attract crowds to the walls of Castello Sforzesco to see the “Oh Bej Oh Bej” Fair that has been bringing specialities, sweetmeats and craft items washed down with a warm glass of mulled wine to visitors for centuries. On 9 December, Rho Fiera Milan will welcome the Artigiano in Fiera craft fair. The Musical Advent Calendar will count down to the events: from 1 to 24 December, when the sun goes down, the windows overlooking Piazza Duomo will become a spectacular backdrop for music, entertainment and more: the packed programme will also include concerts, exhibitions and ice-skating rinks.

MANTUA, TUFFO NEL THUN WINTER VILLAGE
1 – 26 December 2018
A fun-packed calendar for a dream Christmas. Mantua is celebrating Christmas again. Visitors are invited to rediscover and enjoy the appeal of the city decked out for Christmas: museums, streets in the old town centre, historical walls and artistic creativity. Events include Thun Winter Village Mantua in the splendid green area of Piazza Virgiliana with an enchanting market village: 60 exhibitors and the cream of Italian handicrafts, food and wine.

VALTELLINA – MARKETS AND NATIVITY SCENES
1 December 2018 – 6 January 2019
Every corner of Valtellina is celebrating Christmas and the arrival of the New Year! Ski competitions, New Year markets and festivals to make your mountain holidays unique. From Aprica to Livigno, Bormio to Valfurva, Valchiavenna to Morbegno and the magical Valdidentro. In Livigno, the magic of Christmas will enfold the old town centre from 6 - 23 December 2018, framed by a snowy mountain backdrop. Warm yourself with mulled wine or hot chocolate and tasty roasted chestnuts as you stroll between the stalls. In Bormio on 31 December, don’t miss the customary New Year “fiaccolata”: a long train of torches that winds along the legendary Stelvio piste creating a line of bobbing lights. The procession will be followed by a snowmobile parade and a starlit firework display.

LECCO, NATIVITY SCENES AND DIORAMAS
2 December 2018 – 13 January 2019
For the eighth consecutive year, Lecco will stage an exhibition of nativity scenes and dioramas. Palazzo delle Paure will host an exhibition nativity scene made by partners from Lecco and craftspeople from all over Italy. Every scene interprets the birth of Jesus in a different way and in a different setting. The exhibition is enhanced by statues made by master sculptors from Italy and abroad.

A LIVING TREE IN MONZA!
8 December 2018 – 7 January 2019
The magic of Christmas gets under way in Monza on 8 December with a musical procession by the Zampognari. This will be followed on 15 December by a flash mob in Piazza Trento e Trieste to create a gigantic living Christmas tree: this is a spectacular and stirring event for all ages enlivened by balloons, lights, lanterns and Christmas carols.

LAKE GARDA, LIGHTS AND MARKETS
8 December 2018 – 7 January 2019
From Tignale to Tremosine sul Garda and Polpenazze del Garda to Toscolano Maderno, a packed programme of local Christmas festivals concerts and markets will bring Lake Garda to life from 8 December to 7 January. Magical lights will also illuminate the loveliest villages, from Sirmione to Desenzano.
Best event? On 8 December, Festa dell’Immacolata in Prabione, Tignale, will host the return of the Sagra dei Marù with culinary delicacies accompanied by mulled wine and chestnuts.

VALLE CAMONICA
29 December 2018 – 5 January 2019
In the upper Camonica Valley, the magic of Christmas will get under way on 29 December with the “Tabia’ de Nadal”, traditional Christmas markets held in Temù. The stalls are tucked away in the quaintest corners of the square and along the roads of the town centre, with the indispensable mulled wine, local produce tastings, music, entertainment and a special children’s area. Every day, approximately 50 exhibitors will offer Christmas products from picturesque stalls: sweets, decorations, biscuits, small gift ideas, rag dolls, candles and wooden statues as well as glass and pottery items. Don’t miss the New Year torchlit processions from 28 December.  The third torchlit procession, due to take place on 31 December 2018 in Ponte di Legno on the Corno d’Aola piste, will be accompanied by the usual firework display.
