Tour of Garlate
SUNDAY 12 JULY 2020
Villago offers a cultural walk through the ancient streets of Garlate, to discover a particular lake community, more dedicated to the cultivation of hills in the hills and the production of silk, than to fishing and lake culture. In reference to the historical evolution of the village, the itinerary will start from the ancient church of Santo Stefano, an important medieval parish church of the area built on the remains of a Roman villa, and will continue in the historic core of the country, between ancient feudal palaces and ancient courtyards rural buildings of the 15th century. We will go up the hill, up to the historic cultivation of vineyards and wild chestnut trees, the ronchi, and we will go down the stream which flows from the mountain above into the lake. Subsequently, we will learn about the most recent past of Garlate, the era of the rich silky industrialists, who created one of the most profitable poles of silk production on the shores of the lake. We will enter the beautiful courtyards of Villa Abegg, home of a family of Swiss industrialists, who built one of the most important spinning mills on the lake here. We will also visit these industrial spaces, now transformed into a fascinating interactive museum: we will discover the historical machines of reeling and twisting the silk thread … and we will start them up because they are perfectly functional. We will conclude with an interesting storytelling on the industrial culture of the early twentieth century, that culture that turned its back on the lake, but opened up to the future, involving the whole town and its people.
